There is something enduring about great love songs, and Briana Marela’s Call It Love wraps its wide arms around the subject, invoking all its complexity. From the getgo, Call it Love opens with a reflection on a new love. An unfurling, ambient hum builds slowly, articulating that unmistakable head-in- the-clouds feeling that accompanies early love, before giving way to an uptempo melody and a clattering, joyful chorus. Layers and textures evoke its subtler feelings, while the lyrics speak frankly, holding nothing back. Deepening her songwriting and expanding her palette, Briana Marela has made her proverbial giant leap, to explore the sounds of love in beautiful, striking new ways.

There is something unforgettable about great love songs, and Briana Marela's Call It Love wraps its welcoming arms around the subject, invoking all its complexity. Before writing the songs that would become Call It Love, Briana Marela was guided first and foremost by her instincts as a producer & engineer. Marela's original vision for this album was to dig into the two poles of her songwriting styles: her ambient, ethereal side and her brighter, beat-driven pop leanings. She enlisted the production help of Juan Pieczanski & Ryan Heyner of the band Small Black upon hearing their most recent self-produced album.

A love story hasn’t been this adventurous since Romeo and Juliet. Actor and animation king Seth MacFarlane once again proves his mettle as a singer on his third album, a collection of standards, produced by Grammy nominee Joel McNeely. Unusually, the orchestra features a very small string section and only a few brass and woodwinds, but the musicians were carefully selected based on their understanding of the long lost style of playing that this music demands.

Pianist/vocalist Diana Krall pays tribute to the Nat King Cole Trio on her Impulse! set. In general, the medium and up-tempo tunes work best, particularly such hot ditties as "I'm an Errand Girl for Rhythm," "Frim Fram Sauce," and "Hit That Jive Jack." Krall does not attempt to directly copy Cole much (either pianistically or vocally), although his influence is obviously felt on some of the songs. The slow ballads are actually as reminiscent of Shirley Horn as Cole, particularly the somber "I'm Through With Love" and "If I Had You." Guitarist Russell Malone gets some solo space on many of the songs and joins in on the group vocal of "Hit That Jive Jack," although it is surprising that he had no other opportunities to interact vocally with Krall; a duet could have been delightful. Bassist Paul Keller is fine in support, pianist Benny Green backs Krall's vocal on "If I Had You," and percussionist Steve Kroon is added on one song. Overall, this is a tasteful effort that succeeds.

We all know popcorn as a sweet and salty confectionery made from maize that is sold in cinemas. But it also gave rise to an R&B instrumental, The Popcorn, written by James Brown in 1969. Around that time, a new form of party music developing in Belgium was named ‘Popcorn’ after the James Brown hits. Rather like Northern Soul in Wigan, it relied on disc jockeys, notably Gilbert Govaert, unearthing black soul singles from the early 1960s. Northern Soul favoured up-tempo tracks and Popcorn smoochier ones, which prompted a ‘slow swing’ dance. Enjoy this 2CD compilation including Timi Yuro, The Pentagons, Ben E. King and many more.

David Bixler may not be a widely familiar name to jazz fans, though he has held the first alto sax chair in the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra, but he deserves much wider recognition for this impressive date of his own. Accompanied by trumpeter Scott Wendholt, guitarist John Hart, bassist Ugonna Ugekwo, and drummer Andy Watson, Bixler leads his group through a session of challenging, infectious originals. "Aiding and Abetting" has an amusing, sinister undercurrent built upon its catchy theme, showcasing each of the musicians in turn. The mysterious "Unraveled" has a haunting, somewhat ominous quality with Hart's sinewy guitar. "Game Face" utilizes a complex repeated motif as its root, with inventive countermelodies played against it. "Scratch and Sniff the Jive" is a funky strut where Bixler uses the full range of his instrument. The bittersweet ballad "He Cries Every Day" is pure magic and deserves lyrics if it doesn't already have some. Highly recommended.
