Recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, Gianandrea Noseda gathered together an outstanding cast of Italian stars for these searing performances of Verdi s Requiem to open the LSO s 2016/17 season. Originally destined to be a collaboration of movements from Italian composers to honour the death of Rossini, the Requiem evolved into a memorial for the Italian writer and poet Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi revered, and premiered on 22 May 1874 exactly a year after Manzoni s death.

Verdi: Requiem

Verdi: Requiem (Cambridge Music Handbooks) by David Rosen
English | Sep 29, 1995 | ISBN: 0521397677 | 115 Pages | PDF | 3 MB

Verdi's Requiem is one of the most frequently performed works of the choral repertoire, and one of Verdi's most important nonoperatic works. In this new handbook, David Rosen discusses the work's composition and performance history, and analyzes each of the seven movements, considering Verdi's interpretation of the liturgical text, with reference to settings by Mozart and Cherubini. Rosen also considers the work's coherence and the controversial issue of its generic status–the degree to which it is "operatic."

The Verdi Requiem, though is even better, and receives even better performances. When this was made in 1969-70, all four principals were at the top of their form. Montserrat Caballé was at her best in the 60's through around 1972, and here she shows herself to be THE Verdi soprano of the last forty years. Her large, clear, glorious voice, seamless legato and magical pianissimi are heard to great advantage here. Her "Libera me" is a masterpiece of sound and vocal acting. Fiorenza Cossotto was similarly in her prime here, and she is stunning - powerful in the "Liber scriptus" yet capable of soft, tender singing and her "Lux aeterna" haunts the ear. Jon Vickers is an unusual tenor.

Verdi's "Requiem" demands a quartet of soloists who could be cast as leads in Aida, along with a virtuoso chorus and orchestra and a conductor who can balance the score's heaven-shaking drama with its spiritual longings. Small surprise, then, that few recordings, including this one, can fulfill all those demands. Renée Fleming's soprano is perhaps the most beautiful such instrument before the public today, and Olga Borodina's mezzo has the equivalent smoothness and texture, making for a gorgeous duet in the "Agnus Dei." Idlebrando D'Arcangelo, too, has a lovely voice, though, like so many of today's basses, it's tilted toward the top and lacks the deep black resonance that fills out the part. Andrea Bocelli? His fans will love him, but Verdians will be appalled. In sum, a decent Requiem that falls short of the best. –Dan Davis

For its sheer power and its precise balance of the two visions (epic and personal) embodied in Verdi's masterpiece, this is the Requiem to have. It would be hard to quarrel with anyone who chooses Leontyne Price in the 1967 Herbert von Karajan recording over Angela Gheorghiu, or Luciano Pavarotti over Roberto Alagna; the differences are slight and a matter of personal taste. But this is the most intensely dramatic of Verdi's works, including no less a climax than the flaming end of the world, and Claudio Abbado treats the composer's vision even more powerfully than von Karajan, with a magnificent orchestra and chorus at his disposal.
