The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys: …And Other Off-the-Wall Stories About Sports…and Life by James Duthie

Although James Duthie’s daughter had hoped he would write a book featuring princesses, dragons or zebras, you won’t miss them in The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys. Instead Duthie interviews a prophet monkey who predicts games’ outcomes, confesses to the near-homicide of both Walter and Wayne Gretzky, and provides plenty of evidence of his unhealthy obsession with Anna Kournikova.

Having previously recorded British repertoire on Chandos, James Gilchrist joins the pianist Anna Tilbrook nine years after their previous recording, in a lyrical journey through some of Vaughan Williams’s best songs and rarely heard chamber works. They are joined by Philip Dukes, ‘Great Britain’s most outstanding viola player’, according to The Times. This album captures the composer’s love for both the voice and the viola, bringing together five works for tenor and piano, two for tenor, viola, and piano, and two works for viola and piano alone. Central to the recording is the fresh, invigorating, and at times reflective cycle ‘Songs of Travel,’ composed between 1901 and 1904, of special interest is also an arrangement of ‘Rhosymedre’ by the chief music critic of The Times, Richard Morrison, recorded here for the first time and performed by the same forces who gave the premiere of the arrangement in St. John’s Smith Square in 2016 to critical acclaim.

George Fenton delivers on his soundtrack for Anna and the King with an instrumental score that deftly mixes sweeping orchestrations with ethnic percussion. The main theme "Arrival at the Palace" begins with a very exotic violin solo that quickly blossoms into an epic orchestral movement seemingly ready to crescendo at a moment's notice (and it does!). Shorter cues such as "Letter of the Week" and "The House" are passages that perfectly convey the movie's exoticism and its melancholic moods. Throughout, Fenton's music seems to balance between excitement and sadness–the perfect sonic interpretation of The King and I's classic tale. Obviously, many folks will turn to this soundtrack for Joy Enriquez's Babyface-produced single "How Can I Not Love You," included at the very beginning of this disc. One hopes they'll stick around long enough to enjoy the film's score, one of Fenton's very best.

This album presents two transcriptions of the cantatas BWV 170 and BWV 82: two polyphonic works of Joaquín Des Prés and William Byrd, that appear here like "two old faces" of Bach. Heaven appears as a territory of inspiration, a kingdom of peace and joy, beloved delight of the soul (BWV 170). These four works are reflected in a mirror of inspiration: the theme of the final game and farewell to the deceased Master. This vision of the "Beyond" provides a space of harmony in which both cantatas connect, as an echo of the mysterious scene of the presentation of Jesus in the temple …

Anna of the North is Anna Lotterud, an electro-pop artist whose work inhabits a warm, hazy atmosphere. A native of Gjøvik, Norway, the musician met New Zealand producer Brady Daniell-Smith at one of his shows while studying in Melbourne, Australia. They hit it off and recorded her debut single, "Sway," over Skype, and released it in 2014. The song became an Internet hit, and landed her record deals with +1 Records/Honeymoon in the U.S. and PIAS's Different Recordings in the U.K. She followed up the song with "The Dreamer" and "Baby," both in early 2016.

A critically acclaimed film version of the sweet-and-spicy operetta classic.
Opera legends Anna Moffo and René Kollo star in this delightful romantic comedy about a Budapest cabaret singer in love with a young aristocrat. Audiences everywhere have been captivated by Kálmán's gloriously tuneful hit numbers, an irresistible mix of spicy Hungarian rhythms and the graceful strains of the Viennese waltz. This wildly popular 1915 operetta even scored a smash on Broadway as The Riviera Girl.
