Blue Note raids the back of its vaults for all four of Melle's long out of print 10" LPs, plus the 12" Patterns in Jazz, in order to place back in circulation a musician who had been nearly invisible to the jazz world for a good three decades. Though Melle's entertaining self-penned liner notes may be outrageously self-aggrandizing, this collection leaves little doubt that he was (and remains) a marvelous saxophonist and an intriguing composer who hasn't been given his due. On the early sides, Melle plays an erudite, relaxed, always musical tenor sax, and "Transition" marks his recorded debut on baritone, which he uses in a thoughtful, even quizzical manner for the remainder of the set.

This disc continues Thomas Demenga's project of juxtaposing Bach cello suites with contemporary compositions—by Elliott Carter (12/90), Heinz Holliger, and now Sandor Veress, whose music we can hear growing out of, and away from, its neo-classical roots in Bach's polyphony.

A work caught the attention of musici-ans during the late 1990s a Christmas Oratorio by C. H. Graun. The only known copy of it was being housed in the Library of Con-gress in Washington, D.C. But it has so far been impossible to determine either the name of the manuscript copyist or an exact dating of the work and copy. There are many indications that this is a work from the composers phase prior to his years in Berlin. After The Death of Jesus, Thomas Grop-per and his Arcis Vocalists now proudly present the second oratorio of Graun as a CD production for Oehms Classics.

Apparentemente tutto è tranquillo, a Black Spring.

Consummation. This is what the piano music of Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) and Franz Schubert (1979-1828) have in common, the bridge that Thomas Larcher brings to this welcoming solo recital, his first for ECM. To underscore this point, he shuffles Schönberg’s Klavierstücke op. 11 with Schubert’s posthumous Klavierstücke D 946. By turns halting and didactic, the opening pairing opens into the fresh air of Schubert’s precisely syncopated revelry. The contrasts between the two composers are obvious to the ear, but to the heart Schönberg is an extended exhalation to Schubert’s inhalation. Where Schönberg plots slow, jagged caverns, Schubert runs furtively above ground in the sunshine. Yet both seem so urgent to tell their stories, offering lifelong journeys from relatively young minds.

For her debut album on the yellow label Camille has chosen music full of youthful invention – uplifting and positive. She brings her own sensitive interpretation to the French Romantic works for cello and orchestra by Saint-Saëns and Offenbach, including the former’s First Cello Concerto, a masterpiece of its genre, and a delightful excerpt from the latter’s Harmonies des bois “Les Larmes de Jacqueline”. The album was recorded with the Orchestre National de Lille and Alexandre Bloch, and also includes guest appearances by tenor Rolando Villazón and violinist Nemanja Radulović

The most recent solo offering from Food's Thomas Strønen takes things in a decidedly different direction. A renowned jazz percussionist and drummer, Strønen abandons the traditional drum kit setup and makes a percussion record fused subtly with electronics. Composed and performed in real time, Strønen takes elements of jazz, improvisation, and IDM and meshes them together in a weird sonic stew. The results over the eight-track offering reveal a cross between some of Steve Reich's later works mixed with the quirkiness of the Tigerbeat6 catalog and a pinch of Zappa's Synclavier works thrown in for good measure.

Once again, the Saxon Wind Philharmonic under Thomas Clamor unleashes a veritable display of musical fireworks: On their new Genuin Classics CD the musicians take us to Russia - and all who are not yet fans of this fantastic ensemble would do well to come along! The recording offers numerous highlights: the syncopations of Shostakovich's Jazz Suite, the fairy tales of Stravinsky's Firebird, Tchaikovsky's buoyant Capriccio Italien and, not least, the fairy tale Ruslan and Lyudmila. Once again, the Wind Philharmonics overwhelming splendor and captivating virtuosity are impressive.

Precious Lord: New Recordings of the Great Songs of Thomas A. Dorsey is a 1973 compilation album by Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey. The recording features Dorsey's account of his life, as well as contemporary performances of his greatest works. Composer of many enduring gospel classics, Dorsey is considered to be the Father of Gospel Music. It is a collection of performances of his compositions. Dorsey appears on only two tracks: the spoken introduction to "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" and the piano accompaniment on "I'll Tell It Wherever I Go." In 2002, the Library of Congress honored the album by adding it to the United States National Recording Registry.
