1988's The Thieving Magpie is a sprawling double-disc live set which manages to tie up virtually all the loose ends from Marillion's years with charismatic frontman Fish. Like 1984's Real to Reel mini live album, Magpie offers mostly sterling performances packed with both feeling and technical precision, which often times manage to better their studio counterparts thanks to their road-worthy fluidity…

Essential: a masterpiece of Progressive Rock music
“Freaks” is a song by British neo-progressive rock band Marillion. First released in 1985 on the B-side to the number five UK hit single “Lavender”, in November 1988 it was released in a live version on a double A-side single together with the band’s 1985 number two hit, “Kayleigh”. The single was intended to promote the forthcoming double-live album The Thieving Magpie, which documents the band’s history with singer Fish, who had left the band in October 1988; as such, this was Marillion’s last ever single to feature Fish on vocals and cover art by Mark Wilkinson, who would go on to collaborate with Fish.

Before the arrival of the deluxe, double-CD reissues that restored Marillion's entire discography to glory in the late '90s, 1988's B-Sides Themselves was the only source for Fish-era fanatics to experience the many rarities of the colorful progressive rockers' career. Sure enough, no time is wasted with subtlety here, as the monumental "Grendel" opens this collection with 18 minutes of over the top pomp and grandeur. Less challenging, but equally entertaining nuggets like "Charting the Single" and "Three Boats Down From the Candy" follow, but the clear highlights are contained in the songs previously heard on the band's live albums; first single "Market Square Heroes" and the exquisite "Cinderella Search" were featured on 1984's Real to Reel, while the punchy "Freaks" was first heard on 1988's The Thieving Magpie…

Tarras is a quintet consisting of Rob Armstrong (cittern), Joss Clapp (guitar, bass, mandolin), Emma Hancock (violin, whistle), Ben Murray (accordion), and Jon Redfern (percussion, guitar); all five sing. Coming from the border of England and Scotland, the group signed to Topic Records and released their debut album, Rising (picked up for distribution in the U.S. by Rounder) in 1999, when the average age of the members was only 21. The field of young, iconoclastic Celtic bands is getting a bit crowded, but Tarras should be able to step up and take its place without much trouble. Like many of its peers, Tarras is a folk group that doesn't feel terribly bound by tradition…

Marillion emerged from the brief progressive rock revival of the early '80s to become an international recording and touring phenomenon who have sold more than 15 million albums and host fan clubs in ten nations. The band helped pioneer the development of fan-funded music and touring support, beginning in 1997. Marillion's music, while remaining on the progressive, artful side of rock, has evolved to embrace post-punk pop, indie and experimental rock, and even funk and electronica. Each album is different than its predecessor.

Born April 25, 1958, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Derek William Dick (aka Fish) was the dramatic lead vocalist for prog rock band Marillion until beginning a solo career in 1988. Marillion was initially formed as an instrumental band in 1979 by guitarist Steve Rothery (b. November 25, 1959; Brampton, England), drummer Mick Pointer, bassist Doug Irvine, and keyboard player Brian Jelliman. Irvine began singing in 1980 on the group's first demos, but a year later Marillion invited Fish to join as vocalist, and he assumed the frontman position beginning with their 1983 debut album, Script for a Jester's Tear. His strong Peter Gabriel-inspired vocals enforced critics' accusations that Marillion owed more than just a heavy debt to Genesis, but six more albums followed…
