Four young Seattle brass players, all relocated to New York City to study at Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music, decided to form a quartet in late 2011. Through much experimentation they discovered a colorful collective sound that drew from American folk music, indie rock, jazz, and classical music. For the next two years they performed constantly in both cities, creating and developing a large repertoire of original compositions. In early 2013 The Westerlies were approached by their Seattle-based teacher, friend, and mentor, Wayne Horvitz, to create a record of his music.

Few captured the sleek, swinging sophistication of jazz better than pianist, composer, and bandleader John Lewis, who had a long, deep, personal relationship with Jazz at Lincoln Center. “He used to always call our program a miracle,” says Wynton Marsalis. “He used to always say, ‘Keep that miracle going.’”

Forget the smoky, blue and red stage light ambiance of the originals. Instead, imagine cowering in a corner while some half-animal half-human THING, bathed in black light and dripping with blood, shrieks while it tears the place apart searching for you. Xiu Xiu has brilliantly transformed Badalamenti's jazz flecked compositions into a true horror show. Think Trent Reznor, not Julee Cruise.

It's fitting that Chris and Morgane Stapleton open this homage to Waylon Jennings – they're a spiritual echo of Jennings and Jessi Colter, the duke and duchess of Seventies outlaw country, and emblematic of how the movement shaped generations of acts who chafe at Nashville conservatism but refuse to be marginalized. Recorded live in July 2015, this concert LP gathers Jennings' family and friends with all-star acolytes for the rarest of things: a tribute album that almost never flags, with performances that approach or match the originals.
