This assortment of seasonal cheer features Stevie Wonder applying his inimitable vocal technique to familiar and unusual Yuletide songs, with predictably successful results. In "Someday at Christmas" he yearns for a Christmas when "Men won't be boys/playing with bombs like kids play with toys"–this album was recorded during the Vietnam War–striking a plaintive tone not often found on Christmas albums. Other high points include his joyous reading of "Little Drummer Boy," with its steadily building martial beat, and chestnuts like "Silver Bells" and "The Christmas Song," which Wonder delivers with total assurance, as well as a palpable sense of fun. He even brings a measure of soul to more sentimental numbers like "One Little Christmas Tree" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Me," while "What Christmas Means to Me" invokes the bubbling bass line of the Capitols' "Cool Jerk," and features a blissful harp solo.

The Complete Album Collection is Paul Simon's Complete Recorded Works – minus Simon & Garfunkel, of course, along with "Slip Sliding Away" – and, as a whole, it is a mightily impressive body of work, showcasing an artist who remains restless and curious four decades into his career. The package is handsome, presenting each CD as a mini-LP, the sound is terrific, the price is affordable, and the scope is complete, so The Complete Album Collection is in every way an upgrade over the previous The Complete Studio Recordings.

If you like your contemporary jazz crooners smooth and sweet, then likely John Pizzarelli is your main man above today's many post-Sinatra posers. This recording is as solid an effort as he has offered musically, or in terms of his stance and intelligent selection of material. While his guitar playing is subsumed, it is nonetheless precious, and when occasionally paired alongside his father, Bucky Pizzarelli, priceless. The surrounding cast is outstanding, with bassists Milt Hinton, Ron Carter, or Michael Moore; drummers Butch Miles or Connie Kay; and especially the great pianist Dave McKenna — along with cameos from trumpeter Clark Terry and violinist Johnny Frigo.

The Billy Ocean Collection, released through Sony in the U.K., contains material that predates Ocean's move to Jive and the singer's subsequent U.S. mainstream breakthrough. Prior to the likes of "Caribbean Queen" and "Suddenly," he was more popular in the U.K., recording for the GTO label and scoring late-'70s hits with "Love Really Hurts Without You" (number two in the U.K., but also a Top Ten club hit in the U.S.), "L.O.D. (Love on Delivery)," and "Stop Me (If You've Heard It All Before)." The disc also includes some highlights from his early-'80s albums, including "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)" – an excellent slice of slick disco-funk that reached number seven on the Black Singles chart. For an overview of Ocean's entire career, The Ultimate Collection (2004) is the place to go, but The Billy Ocean Collection demonstrates that he had a lot going for him prior to full-on U.S. stardom.
