‘The blues come to Texas, loping like a mule,’ Blind Lemon Jefferson sang through a shower of surface noise as he made his recording debut in March 1926. He established the primacy of Texas blues musicians that continued unchallenged for the next 30 years, encompassing the likes of Henry ‘Ragtime’ Thomas, Texas Alexander, T-Bone Walker, Smokey Hogg, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown, Clarence Garlow, Lil’ Son Jackson, Lowell Fulson and Frankie Lee Sims. Other famous musicians recorded when they were passing through Texas, and that included Lonnie Johnson, Walter Davis, The Mississippi Sheiks, Robert Johnson, Roy Brown, Joe Turner, Honeyboy Edwards, Memphis Slim and Jimmy McCracklin.

A return to their roots, with additional retro flourishes. On their first release for eight years, following singer Sharleen Spiteri’s detour into solo work, Texas have gone back to basics, reconnecting with the solidly crafted simplicity of their earliest albums, Southside and Mother’s Heaven. And beyond the sturdy pop-rock of Spiteri and bassist Johnny McElhone’s melodies, an outside player makes a sizable impression on proceedings. Seven of the 12 tracks were recorded at Richard Hawley’s studio in Sheffield, his evocatively retro fingerprints especially evident on the lovelorn ballad I Will Always and the girl-group swagger of If This Isn’t Real. Bernard Butler also lends a hand, but the signature sound still revolves around Spiteri’s luscious voice, at its most alluring on the Blondie-like Hearts Are Made To Stray.

Scottish Folk, Singer-Songwriter

One of the finest Scots folksingers of his generation, Andy M. Stewart spent his early career with the hugely influential Silly Wizard before heading out on his own and producing a string of excellent solo albums. Stewart has a warm tenor voice, a light touch, and exquisite taste in songs, and these simple, delicate arrangements set off his voice beautifully.

It’s something of a surprise to find yourself with a new album by Texas in your hands. Although the band never officially split up, their fans and followers might have been forgiven for thinking that 2005’s indifferently received Red Book had finally closed the book on the group’s career, especially following the massive brain aneurysm suffered in 2009 by guitarist Ally McErlaine, and the fact that Sharleen Spiteri seemed to be busily occupying herself with such nostalgia-fest solo projects as 2008’s Melody and 2010’s The Movie Songbook. But, lo and behold, McErlaine thankfully bounced back from his collapse and so, now, have Texas, emerging from their extended hiatus with a tour in 2011 and then heading to the studio to make a new record a whopping 25 years after their Southside debut.
