This is the difficult third album with which they overshoot the mark and risk to escape their roots… but they don’t care". Andy Tillison, singer, songwriter, and keyboardist of the Swedish-British prog rock group The Tangent pulls his own leg and at the same time kiddingly prepares the gentle listener for a few changes. However, the innovations A Place In The Queue can offer, one and a half year after the brilliant The World That We Drive Through, will send every fan into raptures. A Place In The Queue is not really a concept album but all songs deal with the idea that our place in society is similar to a queue where everybody lines up…

For this project, members of the Flower Kings (guitarist Roine Stolt, bassist Jonas Reingold, and drummer Zoltan Csorsz) and one ex-member of Van der Graaf Generator (sax player David Jackson) team with the core of Parallel or 90 Degrees (singer/keyboardist Andy Tillison, guitarist Guy Manning, and keyboardist Sam Baine), hence the name of the group.

Having recorded three studio albums, releasing a 2CD live album might seem a bit premature. But based on the evidence here, The Tangent live are a different beast altogether. Though the material is complex and tightly arranged, in a live setting the music is allowed to breath, with this phenomenal ensemble taking ample opportunity to solo.

The Tangent is a collaboration between British keyboardist and singer Andy Tillison and several moonlighting members of Sweden's Flower Kings. The band's overall sound is distinctly British, though, drawing heavily on the mystical Canterbury Scene of progressive rock and, equally heavily, on the sounds of 1970s jazz fusion.

The release of the Tangent's third album was preceded by a strong buzz – the record label was probably desperate to draw attention away from the fact that one of the group's lead figures, Roine Stolt, had parted ways with Andy Tillison. If the strategy worked, then all the best, because A Place in the Queue actually is the group's strongest effort to date and a serious contender for best progressive rock album of 2006, even though it came out in early February.

The Tangent, that great melding of the minds between Parallel or 90 Degrees and The Flower Kings, have released this fine live album that nicely balances out songs from their two studio releases The Music that Died Alone and The World that We Drive Through. This performance was recorded at Aschaffenburg Colas-Saal on March 11,2004, and if you were not fortunate to see them live, this is your only chance to hear them with The Flower Kings Roine Stolt and Zoltan Csorsz, who have since been replaced by Karmakanic's Krister Jonzon and ex-Flower Kings drummer Jaime Salazar.

The eighth studio album of this prog-rock supergroup feat. Andy Tillison, Jonas Reingold (The Flower Kings), Theo Travis (Steven Wilson Band, Gong, Robert Fripp), Luke Machin (Maschine), and Morgan Ågren (Frank Zappa, Kaipa, Devin Townsend, Mats/Morgan Band) perfectly combines all elements of THE TANGENT’s sonic palette. While the album’s sub-title “The Music That Died Alone – Volume 2” alludes on their debut opus, musically references to Earth Wind & Fire, Isaac Hayes, Steely Dan and Tower Of Power melt with the band’s trademark “Canterbury in exile“ approach whereas the symphonic orchestration of its predecessor “Le Sacre du Travail” was abandoned in favour of a more traditionally rocking basis. The surreal artwork was created by Ed Unitsky.
