Duke Ellington did not write for symphony orchestras very often in his career, but when he did, the results were generally memorable. Two of his main works, the six-part "Night Creature" and the four-part "The Three Black Kings," plus an adaptation of the three-part "New World a-Comin'" are interpreted in Italy by the Civica Jazz Band (a big band) and the Ensemble dell'Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. In addition, pianist Marco Fumao is featured on "Swampy River" and pianist Enrico Intra is showcased on a slower-than-usual version of "Take the 'A' Train." There are some strong solo moments along the way, including a string of solos during the third part of "The Three Black Kings," and the orchestra does justice to Duke's work, sometimes hinting at his own big band. This rarely performed music is well worth exploring.

Hungarian pianist-composer HAVASI’s life has revolved around the piano since the age of four, when he had his talent and perfect pitch discovered. During his studies he was extremely motivated by challenges and competitive situations. He would practice for ten hours a day to make the most of himself. He learned the trade of classical music with respect and humility, studied the lives and works of various masters, and graduated from Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary. He came to recognise the huge responsibility involved in teaching, and taught in Budapest’s conservatory for years. As a performer of classical music he built up a vast repertoire, gave concerts in several towns across Europe, and won various piano contests.

Already established as a tireless promoter of Czech music, Jakub Hrůša was the inaugural winner in 2015 of the Sir Charles Mackerras Prize for his advocacy of Janáček’s works, going on to receive ecstatic reviews in 2016 for Glyndebourne Opera’s production of The Cunning Little Vixen. One reviewer enthused that Hrůša “clearly has this music in his bones and blood … he asks for (and gets) an urgent, raw and abrasive quality, expressive of nothing less than the life force itself.” (The Telegraph, 13 June 2016).

A wide orchestral palette and stirring reserves of drama are used to evoke the youthful audacity and death of Phaéton, the ultimate triumph of virtue over pleasure in La Jeunesse dHercule (The Youth of Hercules), and Hercules punishment, spinning wool while dressed as a woman, for the inadvertent murder of one of his guests, in Le Rouet dOmphale (The Spinning Wheel of Omphale). The ever-popular Danse macabre is a spooky depiction of Death playing a dance on his fiddle on a tomb in a graveyard surrounded by skeletal dancers. Conductor Jun Märkl specialises in twentieth-century French music for Naxos and has earned international plaudits for his multi-volume Debussy series as well as for his Ravel and Messiaen discs.

Why would Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), modernist titan and so-called prophet of the New Music, commit himself time and again to the venerable sonata-allegro form of Mozart and Beethoven?
