Man in the Middle Voice: Name and Narration in the Odyssey (Martin Classical Lectures, New Series) by John Peradotto
Publisher: Princeton Univ Pr | Number Of Pages: 207 | Publication Date: 1990-11 | ISBN-10: 0691068305 | PDF | 13 Mb

Beginning with a diagnosis of the current state of American classical philology, John Peradotto proceeds to concentrate on textual practices of naming and narrating in the Odyssey from a perspective that blends traditional philological with semiotic and narratological techniques. What emerges from this reading is a view of the poem as a tense opposition between "myth" and "folktale," recognized as vehicles for contrasting ideological opinions on the world. With terms drawn from Bakhtin's concept of "dialogism," the Odyssey's two voices are characterized as "centripetal" and "centrifugal"–the one associated with dominant political power, with the conventional, the official, and the heroic; the other, with the personal, the disempowered, and the popular, with the antics of the Autolycan trickster and outlaw. As he examines the more audible, "centrifugal" voice, Peradotto shows how the poet's sense of power over his material, represented in Odysseus' ability to narrate a fictitious world, creates a "character" of infinite varietyone whose self- chosen anonymity becomes a paradigm for a subtler ideology of the self than that embodied in the Iliadic Achilles.

Their final studio album – remastered and expanded! Following up 1987’s Lolita Nation (whose reissue appeared on numerous year-end “best of” lists for 2016) would be no easy task for Game Theory. But, Scott Miller and company were certainly up for the task. Re-teaming with producer Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Marshall Crenshaw, Velvet Crush), 2 Steps From The Middle Ages was released in 1988, and showed the band had no shortage of energy, experimentation, and excellent material. This reissue contains the original 13 songs supplemented with a whopping 11 bonus tracks – demos, live performances and covers – all previously unissued.

Anima mea explores the Christian concept of the soul through these masterpieces of medieval Sacred Music. Hildegard of Bingen’s beautifully exalted harmonies represent God’s order in the music of the spheres. The recently rediscovered Erfurt Ritual contains sung music from Master Eckhart’s historical context. These antiphons are performed here for the first time since 1525, along with chants from the liturgy of the Roman mass, music from the Notre Dame School, and a glorious Magnificat. The German duo Ensemble Cosmedin, who take their name from a church in Rome, are considered one of the leading ensembles for medieval and modern sacred music. Music of the soul—gentle and luminous.
