There’s a worldwide analog modular synthesizer resurgence in full swing. Pioneering electronic musician Steve Roach taps into the zeitgeist on Skeleton Keys, a 74-minute album recorded using the large format analog modular synthesizer/sequencer-based system. These are eight emotional and mind-expanding spiraling mandalas-of-sound made from interwoven tapestries of melody, rhythm, tone and musical space. With the sense of an artist working in three dimensional space, Steve’s skill set creates an album that breathes power, passion and vital life energy…

A dark ambient magma flow of ultra deep harmonic immersion. This is the next chapter in the evolution of Steve's rapturous long-form zone-worlds. Moving beyond the drone form, Fade To Gray is a consciousness-activating 74 minute space of slowly churning, shifting harmonic alchemy. Subterranean sonics emerge rich with visual correlations; this could be occurring deep below the earth’s surface, monitored and amplified into a listening space above ground. Steve approached Fade To Gray as if working on a large scale canvas or as a sculptor, shaping an etheric material into a sonic form through the tactile process offered by his analog-hardware based studio…

In this atmospheric opus, pioneering composer and artist of the transcendent - Steve Roach explores the confluence of texture, tonality, sonic abstraction, continuity and space with a set of 6 interconnected paintings in motion. The spirituality of sound is central within these emotional landscapes with infinite horizons. In the way a visual artist mixes their colors and utilize the natural light-infused ambience of the studio to support the piece as it evolves, Roach initiated these mystical sonic states under the influence of the late hours at night. Within the shroud of natural darkness and a few low level lights in the studio supporting the creative flow, these paintings in the dark were born…

The sound of life, interconnected and unfurling… The spiral, a visual symbol of eternity, is a reoccurring metaphoric theme in Steve Roach's pioneering electronic work. Interpreted into musical form, these six spiraling sonic experiences offer a living activation that connects with a sense of the infinite. Roach's long history and love of analog sequencer-based styles reveal a continuing, evolving awakening within Spiral Revelation's 63 minutes. Using only analog and hardware instruments to focus the mind's ear upon a filigree of intricate patterns woven with a direct hands-on approach, the artist sculpts and caresses sound into being in real time. An emotional through-line brings life to these pieces as the unfurling of time's windings connects to the vivid present and illuminates with anticipation a life-affirming future. A masterful expression of an artist who has infused his soul into the art form of electronic music.

This digital-only bonus, entitled "The Early Years", features two amazing long-form sequencer pieces circa 1982.
"Harmonia Mundi" recorded live by Steve Roach and Swiss-born electronic musician Thomas Ronkin, around 1982-83 in The Timeroom, Culver City, California. Steve Roach: "This is completely analog and pre-midi. All the sequencers were synchronized by a master analog clock. We set up on a Saturday morning and created a variety of sequences and patterns for a few hours. After a triple espresso, our mutual passion for this form of music drove the session towards the heart of the sequencer universe"…

Long Thoughts is ambient music master Steve Roach’s first long-form electronic release on Projekt since 2012. In an era where a constant deluge of overstimulation from all directions challenges and fractalizes our attention span into smaller and smaller packets, 73-minute sanctuary provides solace: a soul-renewing immersion in the deeper end of the self-reflection pool.

These harmonically rich, multi-layered pieces breathe with an elemental ebb and flow; with the 2-CD Back to Life, Steve achieves a new pinnacle within the ambient line of his oeuvre. The Steve Roach discography - rather than comprising clearly delineated chronological chapters - can instead be divided into various conceptual strands running and developing both in sync and in contrast with each other. Within these branches, there have always been milestones, and Back to Life is one of them.

Steve Roach and Robert Rich are two of the strongest e-musicians ever - musically, spiritually, and emotionally. But their greatest strengths are their abilities to express themselves musically and to interact cohesively. Rich and Roach approach music from almost completely divergent angles. Roach is always right in the middle of things, searching for answers to his questions. Rich, on the other hand, spends a great deal of time in the setup before diving into the middle. Once there, he begins searching for questions to his answers. Together, these approaches complement each other and they get right down to it…
