Steve Roach and Robert Rich are the most important electronic ambient musicians in the U.S. SoMa is their highly acclaimed follow-up to their first collaboration, Strata. Soma, according to Vedic writings, is "a drink made from plants which could help one commune with the gods." It is also the Greek word for body. So they designed this CD to be a vehicle to traverse between the physical and spiritual worlds. It is deep stuff. The soundscape offers listeners the opportunity to pursue and achieve states of ecstasy. The only extracurricular involvement is from the souls of the music and the listeners. The psychoactive atmospheres penetrate the defenses of the spirit and use Earth's resonant rhythms to tap into the biorhythms. From that point forward, Rich and Roach are in control. Listeners will go to the far reaches of the netherworld and stay within the limits set by this duo.

The second of two collaborations with Kevin Braheny inspired by the desert, this album pays homage to the Edward Abbey book of the same title. It inadvertently became a memorial to that Southwestern nature writer when Abbey died shortly after the music was recorded. Featuring some powerful work by Michael Stearns, this album taps into the psychological depths of stark Southwestern landscapes through a subtle set of soundscapes depicting the hidden dangers, unseen gifts, and intoxication that the desert promises.

Ambient

Within the 35 year orbit of Roach s relentless dedication to sonic-art as a way of life, Shadow of Time marks a reconnection to the touchstone of Roach s signature sound: deep breathing atmospherics, textural healings and zen-like immersion spaces. The inner stillness and sumptuous shimmering of warm analog synthesizers slow down time and enhance the moment in ways unique to Roach s work.

BIOSONIC's labyrinth of bio-electrical rhythmic pieces mixes with passages of deep drifting textural magnetism. Nine tracks possessed with intense fire and driving dynamism push down to the molecular level, while entrancing groovescapes inhabit new textural worlds of mind-expanding power. The music's intention is ecstasy and intensity – like the frenzied rush of red blood cells, nerve impulses or the firing of pistons – such tendencies are balanced by an undercurrent of tranquility and yearning.

Pushing the boundaries of perception-expanding music, Steve Roach and Robert Logan release two vastly different transmissions of powerful emotion and exploration. BIOSONIC's elegant futurism and SECOND NATURE's romantic minimalism are distinct yet linked through a passion for engaging, subtle body-mind states. The former's darkly ecstatic, deeply-layered, electro-neural atmosphere contrasts with the latter's nuanced, sparse, ambient-atmospherics and processed-piano tone paintings.

The immense preparation to present this sonic journey in this perfect environment started nearly a year in advance. The first version of this set was presented at the Ambicon Festival earlier in the year, and the arc of this music reached its zenith in the Dome. After hearing the recording I felt this was the document I wanted to leave behind for someone to experience in 50 years. The extraordinary visual worlds of Audri Phillips’ live animated immersion was integral to the complete experience, wrapping us all in a womb-like expansiveness.

Created at the Timehouse studio between 2013 and 2015. This ultra deep zone was first inspired by plans to perform at the Los Angeles Center Studios’ Vortex Dome in 2013. Entering this space created an immediate immersive experience, even with no music or visual stimulation. Vortex Immersion Zone was born from this geodesic, womb-like space in the same way a natural environment or magnificent cathedral inspires an artist to explore new places within.

Mesmerizing soundworlds from an artist immersed in the sensual realms of electronic/ambient sonic creation. Steve Roach dives further into the deep end of introspective music on this atmospheric set. Focusing on the essential elements of sound, silence, tone, and time-altering forms, the four long-form pieces are a lens to view the molecules of emotion and enhanced perception. Peeling away the surface layers to reveal the subterranean strata beneath, Etheric Imprints brings into form a contained sense of stillness and reflection.

This collection of new and previously unreleased pieces tracks the origin of Skeleton Keys. The first five tracks, recorded in 2005, set the idea into motion of creating a project of pure analog synth/sequencer-based music. I wanted to place the attention directly on these pure kinetic forms, intentionally stripped down to the essentials. The focus remains on the purity of the analog sound and the interweave of the patterned melodic strands and the ever-present pulse. Those elements all WORK together to create the keys for opening into a place of perception only obtained though this form of music.
