New Molly? In every sense of the word ‘new’. It’s her brand new album, ‘Större’. Her third album as an artist, but sonically, it feels like the first album of a brand new artist. It’s a Molly Sandén album like you’ve never heard another Molly Sandén album sound. And it sounds great! What’s it like? Despite the aforementioned changes to her sound – don’t fear – this is still very much a strong pop album. But with the maturity to her sound that you would expect from Molly at this stage. On ‘Större’, she presents her new songs which hint at a definite love for r&b by the artist herself. But despite switching up her genres and influences, she’s most definitely not lost the knack for crafting a top-quality tune.

American violinist Leila Josefowicz has performed John Adams’ 1993 Violin Concerto almost 100 times. It’s a work that makes huge technical and expressive demands on the soloist, and Josefowicz squares up admirably to the challenges. The restless, 15-minute opening movement is a vehicle for her dazzling, rhapsodic solo playing, as she flits here and there, anchored by the steady rhythms of the orchestra. Ancient meets modern when Adams then toys with the Chaconne form—Josefowicz soaring sweetly, mournfully above a recurring bass—before the final visceral, fiery moto perpetuo movement that grows ever more frenzied as it races to its climactic bars.

Although it was Donizetti’s first theatrical success, the original 1822 version of this violent love story was never given a complete performance because the tenor cast in the role of the hero died shortly before the first night. Even so, Donizetti quickly adapted this role for a mezzo-soprano, achieving his first theatrical success. Opera Rara presents the world premiere of the original tenor version. In addition the recording includes six more pieces written for the 1824 revival.

This programme highlights some of the rich musical moments as heard in this incomparable monument during its heyday.

Weinberg’s symphonies are recognized today as a substantial continuation of the Russian tradition. His Twelfth Symphony, written in the style and spirit of Shostakovich, is a response to the death in August 1975 of his great friend and supporter of 32 years. With its subtle stylistic allusions to Shostakovich, this is the longest and most wide-ranging of Weinberg’s purely orchestral symphonies.
