discovered in the changing tones rather than its inherent motion. In fact, despite tempos that modulate between states of turbulence and tranquility, the abiding motion keeps to a common center of gravity. The combustible “Insomnia” kicks up some dissonance in between bouts of silence, and yet when the Aleatoric trio switches things up with the tuneful “Deep Sea Diving,” the cadence pops with the same spark of life as its predecessor.

Through Puccini represents the late-Romantic apex of the Italian operatic tradition, his songs are much less well known and, in their pared simplicity and emotional restraint, could hardly be more different from his stage works. The nineteen complete songs for soprano (two in duet with a mezzo) and piano cover themes typical of lyric poetry including life, death, personal resolution, love, nature, home and religious faith. There are also rare salon pieces and examples of Puccini's secular juvenilia, written between 1875 and 1880.

The irrepressible Dave Douglas delivers another installment in the life of the Tiny Bell Trio, which features his own inimitable trumpet style, but the rhythmic invention of Jim Black on drums, and Brad Shepik's emotionally vulnerable yet volatile guitar playing. Where previous Tiny Bell outings have focused on the possibilities for texture, dynamic, and atmospheric possibilities within a given compositional structure, Songs for Wandering Souls places its eye firmly on group execution this set of compositions – all but two of which are by Douglas, the others arranged by him especially for this of his many groups. The disc opens with "Sam Hill," a beautiful "song," where the lead "call" voice is carried by Douglas, but its "response" is in the lyrical flow of Shepik's string interplay.

Sounding as fresh today as it did in 1973, Seven Songs places the Gary Burton Quartet in an orchestral context, with compositions of Michael Gibbs inspired by Messiaen and Charles Ives as well as Miles and Gil Evans and exceptional soloing by Mick Goodrick, Steve Swallow and Burton himself. The production is exemplary: Seven Songs set a new standard for recordings of orchestral jazz.
Ella Fitzgerald - Sings Sweet Songs For Swingers (1959/2016) [TR24][OF]

Label: Verve Records | Tracks: 12 | 1959/2016

Recorded just before and after the period that she made the George and Ira Gershwin Songbook, Ella Fitzgerald is in fine form on this obscure LP, performing a dozen standards. Although two songs are by Harold Arlen, the composers were in most cases less prolific than the ones she saluted in her songbook series. Ella is backed by a large unidentified orchestra conducted and arranged by Frank DeVol. Swingers alternate with ballads, and as usual, Ella uplifts everything, including "Let's Fall In Love," "Moonlight Serenade," "Gone With the Wind" and "East of the Sun." An enjoyable if not classic release. Review by Scott Yanow
Bett Butler - Winter Lullaby: Songs For The Christmas Child (2016)

Vocal Jazz, Xmas | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 00:53:59 | 128 MB
Label: Dragon Lady Records | Release Year: 2016

In her eclectic fourth album, Bett Butler mixes originals with beloved holiday standards in multiple languages, many with her own English translations. Her bouncy bossa nova “Are You Alone for Christmas Day” recalls Astrid Gilberto and Stan Getz, with an elegant sax solo by Rene Saenz; and in “No Place Like Home for Christmas,” also featuring Saenz, Coltrane meets Clooney (Rosemary, not George). “Pat-a-Pan” veers firmly into Klezmer territory, and Butler’s four-octave range becomes a boys’ choir on “Gesu Bambino.” “O Holy Night” and “Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella” blend classical and jazz in intimate, lively chamber ensembles.
