Del Shannon was a consistent hit maker in the early 1960's. Beginning with a #1 smash in Runaway, he continued the chart run with songs like Hats Off To Larry, Hey! Little Girl, Swiss Maid, Little Town Flirt, Handy Man, Keep Searchin', and Stranger In Town. When the British invasion quelled many of his contemporaries who couldn't adapt to the everchanging musical landscape, Shannon managed to keep current and survive. He tried reinventing himself on several occasions, putting his hit formula aside to try out new sounds, namely working with Snuff Garrett, Leon Russell, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, and the Stones producer Andrew Oldham.

2017 release, Shannon McNally's blues-Americana return, Black Irish will make you dance, break your heart, and save your soul. The album was recorded in Nashville, but it's distinctive sense of place lies 210 miles west, where Memphis meets Mississippi. The primary colors of American music are black and white, and Black Irish displays that hybrid in many shades, mixing country, blues, soul, rock, folk balladry and classic pop.

Shannon McNally’s blues-Americana return, Black Irish will make you dance, break your heart, and save your soul. The album was recorded in Nashville, but its distinctive sense of place lies 210 miles west, where Memphis meets Mississippi. The primary colors of American music are black and white, and Black Irish displays that hybrid in many shades, mixing country, blues, soul, rock, folk balladry and classic pop. Shannon McNally will release Black Irish on June 9 via Compass Records. Black Irish is McNally’s most personal project yet, which is saying a lot, given the Americana singer-songwriter’s deep catalog. But it speaks to the power of connection, and the power of music to create it and to reflect it. The kick off track “You Made Me Feel For You”, was written by her producer, Americana icon, Rodney Crowell, and serves as a metaphor for their collaboration – how his particular understanding of her unique gifts pulled out the career-defining album many have been waiting for since she came on the scene.

This two original albums on CD features Del Shannon's fifth and sixth album. Album five is a Hank Williams tribute featuring only Williams songs. This may have looked like a good idea at the time, and many other pop-artists at the time recorded such tribute albums. Often this had to do with lacking enough new quality material for release, and the record-companies obviously tried to cash in on their popular artists.

Del Shannon's second and third albums appear (after a fashion) together on this Beat Goes On reissue. Actually, what Beat Goes On has re-created is the song lineup of the U.K. version of the Little Town Flirt album, which is a plus, as it contains several songs – including "Runaway" – that were repeated from earlier releases on the U.S. version. In either configuration, Little Town Flirt was one of the better rock & roll LPs of its period and holds up well.
