Known in the United States primarily as the conductor of a surefire recording of Orff's Carmina Burana, Herbert Kegel was respected in Europe as a pivotal figure in establishing the works of such individual Modernists as Blacher, Dallapiccola, Dessau, Penderecki, and Nono in the concert hall and on discs. He was one of the first to champion Britten's War Requiem, while his recording of Schoenberg's Moses und Aron was instrumental in keeping this difficult and challenging work before the public. In 1977 he was named principal conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic, a post he held until 1985. He committed suicide in Dresden on November 20, 1990.

This is an energetic and well played performance and Mark Obert-Thorn has done marvellously well with the transfer. I love the “Pastoral” of all symphonies and to be able to hear this recording from seventy years ago in very tolerable sound is wonderful. I must say that for the general listener the recording from 1960 on Sony is in better sound and indeed a better performance. The Columbia Symphony Orchestra was in fact the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. There is another recording from 1946 from Philadelphia but I haven’t heard it in a decent transfer.

: This is a transfer from analog cassette tape to digital. A very rare opportunity to hear a young Virssaladze. My intention in posting this is to give our Russian friends the opportunity of listening to one of their co-nationals on a South American Tour in Buenos Aires during 1976. The announcer is the official Radio Municipal de Buenos Aires broadcast from the theatre on the day of the concert.

A major new series of recordings dedicated to Robert Schumann, a composer that Levy seems to identify with especial conviction. Daniel Levy’s interpretations emerge with strength and Romanticism, fulfilling the emotional, intellectual and spiritual challenges of Schumann’s music. But it is with a composer to whom he has devoted particular attention, Robert Schumann, that Levy seems to identify with especial conviction. If you listen to some of his most recent recordings, you will find Schumann’s personality and his compendious artistic range illuminated with fresh and perhaps unsurpassed vividness. We already know, from his most familiar works, what an intensely human composer Schumann is–at once mercurial and gemütlich, dreamy and epigrammatic.

Daniel Levy is a pianist with a great interest in philosophy and other subjects, which has led to his writing and teaching about the relationship of music to the human psyche and the sociological benefits of music. One of young Levy's teachers was Vincenzo Scaramuzzo, who also taught Martha Argerich, Mauricio Kagel, and several other well-known musicians. Levy's debut recital included the music of Bach, Chopin, and Schumann, three composers whose works would become pillars of Levy's discography. He went on to study solo and chamber music in Italy, while concertizing in Europe and North and South America.

Once in his later years, Johannes Brahms wrote to the love of his life that all his works should be signed, “really by Clara Schumann.” It was a moving testament from an emotionally guarded old bachelor to the woman who had long been his muse. It was also a recognition that the composer whose work, then as now, has been regarded as the epitome of musical abstraction acknowledged that his music was grounded in his life and feelings. And Clara Schumann was always connected to Brahms’s deepest feelings. This recording is a testament to their lifelong connection.
