When Sam Cooke signed with RCA Records in 1960, he had already had several hits ("You Send Me," "What A Wonderful World," and "Only Sixteen" among them) on the small independent label Keen Records. He had paid attention to the business sides of things, too, and he signed with RCA because he was allowed to keep control of his song publishing…

Although this collection's title makes a weighty claim, a tour through this rich box set makes it clear hear how Sam Cooke's fusion of gospel and pop laid the groundwork for such seminal soul artists as Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and more recently Prince and D'Angelo. This four-disc collection is divided by era and kicks off with Cooke's initial leap from gospel sensation to secular star.

Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963 is the second live album by the American singer-songwriter Sam Cooke. The album was released in June 1985 in the United States by RCA Records. Initially recorded to be released as a live album entitled One Night Stand, the concert at the Harlem Square club (in Miami's historically African American neighborhood of Overtown) was not released until 1985. RCA Victor, at the time, viewed the album as too gritty and raw and possibly damaging to his pop image, and quietly kept the recordings in their archive. The album is generally considered among the best live albums by contemporary music critics, and has been ranked in "best-of" music lists, including on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Three mixes of the record exist: the 1985 issue, a version included on the 2000 box set The Man Who Invented Soul, and a 2005 remaster from RCA.

Black America has been singing Sam Cooke for more than half a century. The volume of great songs that Sam wrote in a secular career spanning barely seven years is matched by the quality of those songs - many of which are fundamental to the evolution of soul music in the early-mid 60s. Its therefore logical and right that Sam should appear in Ace UK's occasional Black America Sings… series, as he does this month in a package issued close to the 50th anniversary of his death in December 1964. Bring It On Home features some of Sam's best-known songs (as well as - this being Ace - some of his least-known), many performed by artists whose careers Sam helped to get underway, including Johnnie Taylor, the Simms Twins, Mel Carter, and Bobby Womack.

In 1964, when this concert at New York City's legendary Copacabana night club was recorded, Sam Cooke was at the top of his game, having charted numerous times with his unique blend of pop and soul. The success doesn't seem to have gone to his head, though: he sounds relaxed and conversational throughout this intimate performance. Accompanied by a band that includes Bobby Womack on guitar, Cooke brings his R&B tendencies further to the fore than on his immaculately produced studio work. He moves deftly through his own hits, like "You Send Me" and "Twistin' The Night Away," but it's on the folk songs "If I Had A Hammer" and "Blowin' In The Wind" that he really stretches out, proving himself a gifted interpreter unbound by stylistic constrictions. At The Copa is an essential part of the Cooke canon.

Collecting the albums the soul singer made as he transitioned from gospel to the world of secular music, Eight Classic Albums gathers up a massive collection of both albums and singles of the great Sam Cooke. Featuring his work between 1957 and 1960, this four-disc set contains Sam Cooke, Encore, Tribute to the Lady, Hit Kit, I Thank God, Cooke's Tour, Hits of the Fifties, and Swing Low. The compilation doesn't contain much in the way of liner notes or supplemental material, so while it makes for a great Sam Cooke starter kit, it doesn't provide much in the way of extra information.

This 23-song rarities compilation stands in Sam Cooke's output roughly where the four posthumous LPs released by Otis Redding stand in his catalog, with the major difference that Cooke's work included far fewer leftovers and sides that were justified simply by being available – he seemed to throw a special effort into almost everything that ever recorded, and that goes double for this disc's content, which encompasses the final year of his recording career.
