This disc brings together a selection of songs by the five members of the Mighty Handful, and serves as a useful and economical introduction to their Read more The Miserly Knight, Alexander Serov’s Judith (both on Harmonia Mundi), and Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery (BMG). He also appears in recordings of Rimsky-Korsakov’s May Night and Shostakovich’s unfinished opera The Gamblers (both on Capriccio), as well as a recording of Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis conducted by Antal Doráti (BIS). He has performed with major opera companies throughout the world. I have not been able to discover the reason for his name change, but it appears that at a certain point he emigrated to the U.S. You would learn little of this history from the Naxos notes.

Ruslanova gave her first concert at the age of 16, to a military audience, where she sang everything she knew. She first started singing for Russian soldiers during the Russian Civil War, and debuted as a professional singer in Rostov-on-Don in 1923. She was noted for her peculiar singing voice and timbre, which was a revival of old traditions in which female soloists would perform on festive occasions. Until 1929, she lived with a Cheka official, then she married again, this time to Vladimir Kryukov. …

Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection.
This is the live record of the 2 UK's studio albums. The sound is only good. There are 2 new songs: "Night after night" and "As long as you want me here". The more accessible "Night after night" is not very complex, more diluted, so that it is a bit disappointing, although there is a very good organ solo.

The artistic concept behind this disc gives us a somewhat unusual compilation, featuring 9 excerpts from an "early Russian" All-Night Vigil–unison chants transcribed from 16th- & 17th-century manuscripts, recorded in 1988 by the Youth & Students Choir of the Moscow Musical Society (Boris Tevlin, cond.) These are followed by the first six movements from Rachmaninoff's "All-Night Vigil," op.37, from the classic (& currently unavailable) 1965 recording by the USSR State Chorus under Alexander Sveshnikov.

In this continuation of his successful series of ‘songs without words' – songs for voice and piano transcribed for cello and piano – Mischa Maisky left the Austro-Germanic repertoire he had previously explored behind and turned to the songs of his motherland in this disc of Russian songs called "Vocalise." For fans of Maisky's earlier discs of Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms, no more needed to be said: the same sweetly singing tone, the same warm-hearted phrasing, the same vibrato, portamento and glissando that distinguished Maisky's those discs was fully present here. From Glinka's lighthearted "The Lark" to Tchaikovsky's aching "None but the Lonely Heart" to Glazunov's yearning "Desire" to Rachmaninoff's melancholic "Sing Not to Me, Beautiful Maiden," Maisky was as wholly committed to these songs as he was to those of Schubert and his performances with pianist Pavel Gililov were as convincing as could be imagined. While this might not work for those who prefer their songs with words or their cello music abstract, for lovers of cello music who wish the 19th century repertoire contained more short but affecting works by Russian composers, Maisky's disc will be just the thing.
