The Naxos budget label has offered many fine, modern opera recordings at an unbeatable price and this new set of Rossini's first dramatic opera is in the best traditions of the house. Alberto Zedda leads his Bruges chamber forces in a spirited and energetic reading that still offers plenty of room for Rossini's arias and cantilenas to breathe. The singers range from good to excellent, with Polish mezzo Ewa Podles a wonder in the title role, her vocal range extending from a warm contralto to glittering top notes. Podles' many duets with the fresh clarion soprano of Sumi Jo as Amenaide are the set's highlights. With wonderfully clear, rich sonics, this performance of Rossini's infrequently recorded dramatic opera would be a top choice, regardles of the price.

Rossini is best known for a delightful long list of Comic Operas; less well known is the Rossini of Opera Seria. Of the several that I've seen, heard on radio or on recordings, Tancredi is on the top of the list. The present DVD recoding of the Florence May Festival of 2005 is a most satisfactory presentation of this masterpiece. Two of the singers are in really good voice and can handle the difficult and complex Rossini line…

This early Rossini opera is so obscure that it doesn't even get a mention in "Kobbe's Opera Book." It's an opera seria in a similar style to Mozart's "Idomeneo." The lead role of the warrior Tancredi was originally a castrato part - here it's performed by a mezzo. Mario Bayo is the standout cast member as Tancredi's love interest. The plot is a typical tale of love vs. duty - it doesn't really matter when and where is it set. Lots of impressive coloratura singing. The production and sound quality are very good. Be sure to wait through the curtain calls, as there is an "encore" of the alternative ending Rossini wrote.

Curiously, Rossini has composed two roles for a castrato: to Alceo in the cantata Il vero omaggio, and that of Arsaces in Aureliano in Palmira, both for Giambattista Velluti, the last castrato internationally renowned opera . Against the Argentine tenor Franco Fagioli has deliberately given up these roles to this album Rossini, preferring to focus on transvestites roles that address sexual ambiguity from another angle. In operas "serious" by Rossini, rarely given today, there are many male characters whose roles were written for singers.

One of the most acclaimed musicians of his era, Toscanini was a conductor of the "old school" - aristocratic, perfectionistic and something of an autocrat on the podium. After a brief flurry of interest in Fascism in the 1910s, he rapidly became disillusioned with the movement and indeed became a personal rival of Mussolini, repeatedly antagonising him through acts of artistic defiance such as refusals to open concerts with the Fascist anthem Giovinezza.
Eventually he fled Italy for the United States, becoming the first conductor of the newly-formed NBC Symphony Orchestra, with whom he pioneered radio broadcasts and recordings that made him a household name in America until his retirement at the age of 87. He gave the premiere performances of several major works, including Barber's Adagio for Strings and the American premiere of Shostakovich's Seventh Symphony.
