Genre: Folk-Rock, Americana, Singer-Songwriter | Label: Philo

Anybody who has followed the development of Ray Wylie Hubbard as an artist over the last dozen years or so has had to be keenly aware that he's been moving through changes in lyric style, melodic invention, and production styles. He's also been on a spiritual odyssey in his music that culminated on the excellent Eternal & Lowdown. Growl is a record of an awareness gained; it is expressed in the most basic, elemental physical and emotional truths (from humor to doubt to surrender to anger at hypocrisy) in these songs.

Four decades after its release, this is still the most controversial record in Yes' output. Tales from Topographic Oceans was the place where Yes either fulfilled all of the promise shown on their previous five albums or slid off the rails in a fit of artistic hubris, especially on the part of lead singer Jon Anderson and guitarist Steve Howe, who dominated the composition credits here…

Jackhammer Blues is the best in Rick Derringer's evolving mastery of the genre of blues guitar. They just keep getting better and better. Derringer's voice may be naturally better suited to rock & pop than the blues, but he belts it with soul and lets his guitar do the rest of the talking.

Rick Derringer plays the blues!!!! There is not one bad track on this album. iI have played many of these songs at various venues and the response is always positive. Rick rocks the blues with a vengance and a style akin to Stevie Ray Vaughan. I am constantly asked where i dug up 'that unknown Stevie Ray song'.

With The Band, bassist Rick Danko was one of a triumvirate of vocal angels that included pianist Richard Manuel and drummer Levon Helm. All three have passed on now. Band songwriter and guitarist Robbie Robertson and organ virtuoso Garth Hudson alone remain. The Band is responsible for some of the richest roots rock and Americana ever recorded. Their depth of talent is unsurpassed. This four disc set gets off to a percolating start with an acoustic guitar strum and a pepped up live version of 'Java Blues' from Danko’s excellent self titled 1977 solo album. Bassist Danko is often on acoustic guitar throughout 'Stage Fright Live Collection'. “Kind of like being in your living room,” Danko says, describing this intimate live gig.

Fragile was Yes' breakthrough album, propelling them in a matter of weeks from a cult act to an international phenomenon; not coincidentally, it also marked the point where all of the elements of the music (and more) that would define their success for more than a decade fell into place fully formed…
