Research, Ethics and Risk in the Authoritarian Field

Research, Ethics and Risk in the Authoritarian Field By Marlies Glasius
English | PDF,EPUB | 2018 | 130 Pages | ISBN : 3319689657 | 1.64 MB

This book offers a synthetic reflection on the authors’ fieldwork experiences in seven countries within the framework of ‘Authoritarianism in a Global Age’, a major comparative research project. It responds to the demand for increased attention to methodological rigor and transparency in qualitative research, and seeks to advance and practically support field research in authoritarian contexts. Without reducing the conundrums of authoritarian field research to a simple how-to guide, the book systematically reflects and reports on the authors’ combined experiences in (i) getting access to the field, (ii) assessing risk, (iii) navigating ‘red lines’, (iv) building relations with local collaborators and respondents, (v) handling the psychological pressures on field researchers, and (vi) balancing transparency and prudence in publishing research. It offers unique insights into this particularly challenging area of field research, makes explicit how the authors handled methodological challenges and ethical dilemmas, and offers recommendations where appropriate.
Research Ethics in the Digital Age: Ethics for the Social Sciences and Humanities in Times of Mediatization and Digitization

Research Ethics in the Digital Age: Ethics for the Social Sciences and Humanities in Times of Mediatization and Digitization By Farina Madita Dobrick
English | PDF | 2017 (2018 Edition) |159 Pages | ISBN : 3658129085 | 5.39 MB

The book discusses the multiple issues of a digital research ethic in its interdisciplinary diversity. Digitization and mediatization alter social behavior and cultural traditions, thereby generating new objects of study and new research questions for the social sciences and humanities. Furthermore, mediatization and digitization increase the data volume and accessibility of (quantitative) research and proliferate methodological opportunities for scientific analyses.

The Stored Tissue Issue: Biomedical Research, Ethics, and Law in the Era of Genomic Medicine

The Stored Tissue Issue: Biomedical Research, Ethics, and Law in the Era of Genomic Medicine by Robert S. Olick
English | May 20, 2004 | ISBN: 0195123689 | 366 Pages | PDF | 21 MB

Genetics research with stored human tissues provides many benefits and holds much promise. Yet how this critical research is conducted sometimes raises serious ethical, legal, and social concerns, and it is difficult to balance the promise of biomedical research with our time-honored commitments to individual choice in such fundamental matters as control over personal health information and the disposition of our bodily tissues.
