Requiem for My Friend: (Zbigniew Preisner) In the mid-1990's, Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner was working on a collaboration with his close associate, director Krzysztof Kieslowski, and screenwriter Krzysztof Piesiewicz that would have produced the kind of massive operatic concert at the Acropolis in Athens, Greece that Vangelis and others had strived to create through the years. Their collaboration was quite fruitful, yielding the films and scores for the Colours Trilogy (Blue, White, and Red) as well as Dekalog and The Double Life of Veronique…

The multi awarded soundtrack composer Zbigniew Preisner, after the "Requiem for my Friend" dedicated to the memory of his friend Kieslowski, he started "Silence, Night and Dreams", a project that gave him the freedom to create without having to follow a specific screenplay. It is a work for soloists, choir and orchestra with leading vocalist the sublime Teresa Salgueiro from Madredeus. Preisner uses texts from The Book of Job and the Gospel of St. Matthew and the orchestration has elements of both classical and contemporary electronic music. The work is in nine movements, with the texts sung in English and in Latin. Just note the titles of the sections and let Preisner’s spiritual and atmospheric music wash over you. This may be the single most powerful piece of music that the Kronos Quartet has ever recorded, and perhaps that Terry Riley has ever written. This is because Requiem for Adam is so personal, so direct, and experiential. Requiem for Adam was written after the death of Kronos violinist David Harrignton's son. He died, in 1995, at the age of 16, from an aneurysm in his coronary artery. Riley, who is very close to the Harringtons and has a son the same age, has delved deep into the experience of death and resurrection, or, at the very least, transmutation. Requiem for Adam is written in three parts, or movements. The first, "Ascending the Heaven Ladder," is based on a four-note pattern that re-harmonizes itself as it moves up the scale. There are many variations and series based on each of these notes and their changing harmonics, and finally a 5/4 dance as it moves to the highest point on the strings. The drone-like effect is stunning when the listener realizes that the drone is changing shape too, ascending the scale, moving ever upward and taking part in the transmutation of harmony.

Following the success of his 2011 album Rose of Sharon a celebration of 18th Century American music that landed on Billboard s classical chart and critics year-end lists the latest project by Joel Frederiksen and the Ensemble Phoenix Munich takes them all the way back in time to… 1972. That was the year the late British troubadour and cult favorite Nick Drake released his third and final album, Pink Moon. Initially, the album garnered a small amount of critical attention, but it was not until decades after Drake s death that it received widespread public and critical acclaim. Today, the sparse and unadorned tracks of Pink Moon are regarded by many fans and music critics as the greatest efforts of a tragically short career.

After the fall of communism, and certainly after this wide-ranging demolition of Marxism by Austrian scholars, who can possibly defend Marxism? Plenty of people, many of them smart otherwise but uneducated in economics. This book is the antidote, covering the whole history of this nutty and dangerous system of thought. It begins by an alternately hilarious and tragic introduction by the editor Yuri Maltsev. He describes in vivid detail life in the Soviet Union, which, he points out contrary to myth, was indeed an attempt to realize Marx's vision. Of course the system moved away from the strict doctrine, lest everyone in the country be reduced to the most primitive possible economic conditions.
