The pianist Alexei Lubimov has championed the music of those Soviet composers who explored an avant-garde style in the 1960s under the influence of the West, but then retreated from high modernism and sought a new style that could both offer a way forward and still allude to the sentimentality of the Classical and Romantic eras. The Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov is a famous example of such a career arc, and here Lubimov performs his first three sonatas for solo piano, followed by a sonata for cello and piano where Ivan Monighetti appears.

There is no doubt that we owe the creation of Johannes Brahms' last piano and chamber music works to his meeting with the Meiningen Court Orchestra's exceptional clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld, who inspired Brahms to new heights of creativity. The complementary sonatas op. 120, with their interwoven motifs, are full in equal measure of exuberant joy, driving passion and moments of picturesque calm. A kaleidoscope of emotions, and a sublime, pioneering gift for his admirers and musical successors. In a subtle musical dialogue, Nicolai Pfeffer and Felix Wahl present a refreshing, high-contrast image of this late work, full of powerful yet lyrical nuance.

Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild under the name Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild published four piano pieces for the Parisian publisher Maho: a Nocturne and a Polka, both in C minor and two Waltzes, in A minor and F minor. The publication goes unnoticed until 2014. Pianist Philip Sears, in search of rare pieces on the site of the Bibliothèque National de France Gallica, found that two of these pieces are identical to Frédéric Chopin’s posthumous works: the Nocturne in C Minor B. 108, unpublished until 1937, and the Waltz in A minor B. 150, unpublished until 1955. Only dynamic indications are different, especially in the Nocturne. The homogeneous dynamics of the Maho edition in the version published by the Chopin Institute in Warsaw are more pronounced. In addition, Nocturne is indicated with Andante sostenuto instead of Andante.

‘Piano Icons For The 21st Century’ is an exceptionally performed collection of contemporary piano works by Pärt, Janáček, Sculthorpe and Mompou, plus the world premiere recording of John Tavener's Ypakoë. Piano Icons For The 21st Century was widely acclaimed upon its release and named a Gramophone ‘Critics' Choice': 'my disc of 2000 is without hesitation Elena Riu's extraordinarily fine CD.' John Tavener was inspired to write his first major solo work for piano in over twenty years after hearing Elena play. She premiered Ypakoë, a series of meditations on the death of Jesus, at the City of London Festival. The programme also includes Janacek's In The Mist, an intensely personal and darkly hued cycle, plus an intriguing collection of miniatures by three composers who, in her view, are on a similar wavelength: Peter Sculthorpe, the late Catalan composer Federico Mompou, and Arvo Pärt.
