There may never be another Chet Baker, but on this particular night in Zagreb, poor Baker was not playing his best: His chops are weak, and his voice is strained and shallow. Still, these four duos, with longtime collaborator, guitarist Philip Catherine, have their rewards, such as the lengthy, substantial, and melodic solos by the guitarist.

Ever since the 1970's, Philip Catherine has had a decisive influence on the sound of the guitar in jazz. This period four decades has also been the time during which the guitarist has worked together with Siggi Loch, which made his the appearance of first CD on ACT feel like such a natural step. That album 'New Folks,' a duo album with the bassist Martin Wind, is now followed by The String Project - Live in Brussels . Philip Catherine is one of the finest exponents of the melodic way of playing the guitar. Having been schooled in the music of Django Reinhardt, Catherine took his playing to another level in his duo with guitarist Larry Corryell, and several albums which he made with Chet Baker constitute a major recorded legacy.

Philip Catherine - the South German Newspaper in Munich just recently wrote that he “plays things that cannot be heard by any other guitarist in the world today”. His partner on the bass, Martin Wind, is one of only a few Germans who made it in New York. Both are aesthetes that love melodic jazz with Swing roots. Without any haste or superficial virtuosity, but instead with complete mutual trust they find the ideal tone, the right timbre for each note, lining up sound and space perfectly. A meeting of generations marked by harmony and respect.

The first of two fine guitar duet recordings with Phillip Catherine. Of the two, Catherine's sound is more rooted in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and tends to be more introspective. Coryell is his usual incorrigible self; however, Catherine's presence seemed to inspire more experimentation and intelligent playing on Coryell's part.

This hard-to-find CD gives us Chet in good shape, in good spirits, and with excellent sidemen. You know you're in for a treat, when you hear the opening lines of "Crystal Bells" with Baker's sweet lines floating above Catherine's ringing guitar. After swinging pretty on "Strollin'", Chet delivers one of his best performances of the J.J. Johnson standard, "Lament". Chet turns this sad tune into one of hope and happiness as his horn flutters through the melody, but still keeping the same traditional slow tempo…

"Leaving" is usually a tune that leaves me cold, it doesn't have a memorable melody. However, Chet punches it up here, with a strong, staccato opening, eventually moving to long, brisk solos. He wraps up this set with a soft and fast "Cherokee" and ending with "Estate". This last tune is a great fit for Chet. I wish he had included it in his repertoire more often. Those long, low notes that open the tune just seem to be meant for him. ~ Chetbakertribute.com
