Musician, lead guitarist with Roxy Music and acclaimed record producer Phil Manzanera’s latest solo outing takes the form of a fascinating, multi-faceted musical memoir. Produced by Manzanera and mastered by Pink Floyd soundman, Andy Jackson it was inspired, variously, by Manzanera’s Colombian mother, ‘Magdalena’, the heady days in the 70’s of early Roxy Music, musical adventures in Spain and Sweden and days spent exploring Cornwall. ‘The Sound Of Blue’ also offers up a startling cover of the track, ‘No Church in the Wild’ by Jay Z and Kanye West, who sampled Manzanera’s guitar riff for the opening track of their 2012 smash album, ‘Watch the Throne’.

Disc 1 covers the first twenty years with Manzanera providing the musical context for the words of other co-writers, such as Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno, as well as writing varied instrumental music. The most recent 10 years are on Disc 2 with Manzanera writing and singing his own lyrics, including 10 minutes of weirdness created by Eno's 'treatments' of music by former Roxy colleagues, Manzanera, Mackay and Thompson.

Reissue with SHM-CD format and new 24bit remastering. The Johnny Smith sound is a wonderful one – not just the sound that he makes with his groundbreaking work on the strings of the guitar, but also the way he records the instrument – which set a new standard in jazz guitar albums, and also helped pave the way for countless generations to come! A date like this is a great example of the standard-setting work that Smith was able to give us in his prime – and the approach slightly updates the Smith guitar sound of the early 50s – clarifying it a bit, but still keeping that great tone right out front – with a group that includes Hank Jones on piano, George Duvivier on bass, and Ed Shaughnessey on drums.

With hype building behind a clutch of successful singles, London quartet Then Jerico made its full-length debut in 1987 with the grandiosely titled First (The Sound of Music). The album, mostly produced by Owen Davies, actually featured a sound common in the mid- to late '80s: massive backbeats married to the big guitars that had come back into vogue. Atop it all sat the impassioned, warbling vocals of Mark Shaw, whose haircut and cheekbones made him a strong contender for the U.K.'s leading pinup of the moment. But the group wanted to be seen as a band – and taken seriously – and First wasn't about to turn into any crass chart cash in…

Some of the greatest names on today’s classical music scene pay Homage to Astor Piazzolla. Presented in two distinct programmes, the first part highlights the most varied of influences: this is not just about the tango; there are influences from jazz and the classical traditions of Bach and Vivaldi, all brought together here. The second part combines original classical compositions – the ‘tango operita’ María de Buenos Aires, the Tango Ballet and Concierto del Angel.
