Nice & Strong finds Paul deLay at the top of his form, turning out a set of hard-driving Chicago-style blues. Not only does deLay sound tougher than ever, his songs are simply stunning, displaying a devilish humor and a new vulnerability. It's another winning record from one of the great contemporary blues musicians and harp players of the '90s.

The 17 selections on this disc represent the earliest recordings by one of the most important and definitive jazz combos in history. These are interesting because Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond on alto sax had established the basic sound long before bassist Gene Wright and drummer Joe Morello would join them for the 'classic quartet' era. One other thing that is interesting is even though recording technology was relatively crude in the very early 1950s the sound quality on this album is more than acceptable.

Great Britain’s famous Proms concerts usually end with a program that is British to the core, featuring many favorites that English audiences expect in the same way that Viennese audiences expect their Radetzky March on New Year’s. Let’s make this clear, then, from the start. This is not an actual Proms performance but a studio recording of music that is usually heard at that event. It is English to the core; about four tracks in, you’ll feel like you should be saluting as the Queen passes by.

The first question one has to ask upon even gazing at the album sleeve of Paul Rodgers' Live in Glasgow in 2006 is, of course, has he still got it? That's like asking if Bob Dylan still has it, or Jimmy Page or Brian May or Ian Hunter. Hell yes he does! Recorded on the final night of a European tour, Rodgers and his bandmates, guitarists Howard Leese and Kurtis Dengler, bassist Lynn Sorensen and drummer Ryan Hoyle, lay down a tough, big sounding set of classics and more recent songs – including one new one – from his entire career and give them life, breath and fire again. We haven't heard live guitars sound like this in a long time, probably since the early '80s…

Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water was the hottest album in the land in 1970, and Paul Simon's tunes from that and their earlier albums unexpectedly find a congenial advocate in Paul Desmond. Against the odds as determined by bopsters, Desmond finds something beautiful, wistful, and/or sly to say in each of these ten tunes, backed by Herbie Hancock's Rhodes electric piano and a set of ravishing, occasionally overstated (as in "America") orchestrations by Don Sebesky. "The 59th Street Bridge Song" is given a jaunty, carefree rendition, adapting quite well to a jazz treatment (after all, Desmond's old teammate in the Brubeck quartet Joe Morello played drums on S&G's original record) and Desmond even does some cascading overdubs on his solo part…
