Państwo koreańskie (po koreańsku Chosan, po japońsku Chosen) istniało od 2333 roku prz. Chr. Strategiczne położenie czyniło je łakomym kąskiem zarówno dla Chin, jak i dla Japonii. Stosunki Korei z tymi krajami były zmienne i skomplikowane, nigdy jednak nie były przyjazne. Japonia okupowała Koreę podczas wojny rosyjsko-japońskiej w latach 1904-1905, a w 1910 zaanektowała jej terytorium. Japończykom zależało na zajęciu Korei, żeby wyzyskać jej bogactwa naturalne i ludność. Na swojej ziemi Koreańczycy byli odtąd obywatelami drugiej kategorii. Na wszystkich kierowniczych stanowiskach, zarówno we władzach, jak i w przemyśle, pracowali Japończycy. W szkołach uczono po japońsku i niszczono przejawy kultury i tradycji koreańskiej. Koreańczycy musieli nawet przyjąć japońskie imiona. Podczas II wojny światowej przemysł i rolnictwo koreańskie miały wspierać wysiłek wojenny Japonii. Miliony Koreańczyków wcielono do armii i przymusowo zatrudniono w fabrykach. Niektórych nawet wysyłano do Japonii, skąd potem trafiali do krajów okupowanych prze/ Japonię. Mężczyźni pracowali dla armii jako siła robocza, a kobiety jako prostytutki.
