Federico Moreno Torroba composed about one hundred works for the guitar, thereby reinforcing his status as one of Spain’s great twentieth-century composers. Homenaje a la seguidilla pays lively tribute to that characteristically Spanish song and dance, while the Tonada concertante is in turns playful and introspective. Concierto de Castilla features a free-spirited lyricism evocative of the folklore of Castile, a vast expanse in the middle of Spain with which the composer strongly identified.

This extraordinary musician was born in the village of Ahualulco, San Luís Potosí, on January 28, 1875, the same year as Ravel, Melartin, Gliere and Max d'Ollone. He began his formal studies at the age of ten in the State Capital and later moved to Mexico City to continue his education in the National Conservatoire (Conservatorio Nacional de Música). In 1899 the Mexican government awarded a grant to the young musician, then aged 24, to continue his studies in Europe. In Leipzig he entered the Royal Conservatoire where he studied composition with Salomon Jadassohn, violin with Hans Becker and theory with Carl Reinecke, who also taught another great Mexican composer: Ricardo Castro.

A native of Bohemia, Antonín Dvořák contributed much to the reestablishment of Czech national musical identity in the 19th century. It was the popularity of his choral music in England, however, that led to the development of the Mass in D from its smaller-scale original into a movingly dramatic and jubilant masterpiece with full orchestra. Dvořák’s celebratory Te Deum is comparable in form to a four-movement symphony. Antoni Wit is considered by ClassicsToday.com to be ‘the best conductor around these days for big choral works’. His acclaimed recording of Dvořák’s Requiem is available on Naxos 8.572874-75.

It's great to see the music of Nino Rota getting so much attention. He was a wonderful composer, and the ballet suite from La strada may be his orchestral masterpiece (just a quick note: the French language title identifies this as a suite from the eponymous film; it is in fact the more familiar arrangement of the later ballet). There are now four competitive recordings of this piece, the least interesting of which is on Chandos with the Teatro Massimo orchestra: not bad, but not as well played or recorded as either Muti's slightly stiff version with the excellent La Scala forces, or Atma's brilliant recent release featuring the Greater Montréal Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin. All of the couplings differ in various ways, though Muti also has the dances from Il gattopardo (The Leopard).

“One of the first of Luaka Bop's many fine South American and Caribbean collections, Dancing With the Enemy features a fertile mix of modern, son-derived cuts made in Cuba during the ‘60s and ‘70s. The collection ranges from the classic acoustic-folk sound of Maria Teresa Vera's "Es No Es Na" and the vintage rumba stylings of Chapottin y Sus Estrellas' "La Guarapachanga," to the rock-inspired boogaloo and pop of Orquesta Revés' "Fifí, Teté y Popó." Also featuring choice mambo, descarga, and tipica sides, this 16-track disc will no doubt please students of modern Cuban music with credits that include Latin music innovators like Los Van Van, Celeste Mendoza, and Orquesta Riverside. Along with other important Luaka Bop compilations in the Brazil Classics series, Cuba Classics 2: Dancing with the Enemy is an essential record for fans of international music”. – Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
