The project for this recording was conceived on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the birth of Alessandro Scarlatti; its aim is to exemplify the composer’s vast opera production through a selection of arias taken from his last six titles: three – Telemaco (1718), Marco Attilio Regolo (1719) and Griselda (1721) – originally commissioned for Rome, more specifically for the Teatro Capranica; three – Tigrane (1715), Carlo re d’Allemagna (1716) and Cambise (1719) – first staged in Naples, in the seasons of the Teatro San Bartolomeo. La virtù trionfante dell’Odio e dell’Amore (1716) would be added to these but only the libretto has come down to us. Finally we deliberately chose not to consider another opera written in the same period for Naples, Il trionfo dell’Onore (1718) since it is a comedy.

Bao Yuankai (b. 1944), is one of China's most popular and respected contemporary composers. His Third Symphony, "Beijing Opera" adapts the western late-Romantic symphonic form into a quartet of sketches of the four main characters of Chinese opera: Jing, the Painted Face character; Chou, the Clown; Dan, the female lead and Sheng, the male lead. The standard symphony orchestra is augmented with a large number of traditional Chinese percussion instruments – adding additional local color to his creative score. While Bao's music tends towards the more conservative aspects of Chinese music, his gift for melody, and imaginative orchestrations - to say nothing of the prestige and celebrity he enjoys at home - provide valuable insight into the history of China's still-young symphonic tradition.

The Threepenny Opera (German: Die Dreigroschenoper) is a musical by German dramatist Bertolt Brecht and composer Kurt Weill, in collaboration with translator Elisabeth Hauptmann and set designer Caspar Neher. It was adapted from an 18th-century English ballad opera, John Gay's The Beggar's Opera, and offers a Marxist critique of the capitalist world. It opened on 31 August 1928 at Berlin's Theater am Schiffbauerdamm. (From Wikipedia)
