Any project in the works for two decades is bound to generate its fair share of myths and so it is with Neil Young's Archives, a series of a multi-disc box sets chronicling Young's history. Originally envisioned in the late '80s as a Decade II, the project quickly mutated into a monster covering every little corner of Neil's career. With its escalation came delays, so many that it sometimes seemed that the project never really existed; it was just a shared fantasy between Neil and his faithful…

He is an Alabama cowboy, a male camellia lady, a godfather of grunge. On the occasion of his 60th birthday on November 12th, 2005, Neil Young played three days in the NBC late night show from talk master Conan O'Brien to present his album Prairie Wind. He staged himself as long-haired grandfather, patriarch of a widely ramified musical family between LSD-, country-, blues-, heavy metal- and grunge-rock. However he didn't forget that he is an outlaw and that he has to make a stand against the whole world. No, this man can't stop, he loves his country and provokes with statements about patriotism and against the Bush administration as well as with the essential question what remained from the dream of the hippie generation. This man is not getting any older. Whilst other rock musicians in his age confine themselves to serve the nostalgic wants of their fans, Neil Young tries to prevent that. This man has no need to acknowledge any guilts. Neil Young was always older and that's why is now younger than anybody else. Long may you run! [Amazon]

A strange one for sure. Contains a few of Neil's lesser known classics (Mideast Vacation, Too Lonely, Prisoner of Rock n Roll) as well as one of his all-time worse songs, Inca Queen, which still manages to have a gorgeous melody. Around the World is sung with great passion & anger. Very much a mixed bag. But if you're a fan, you'll have to own it eventually.

Year of the Horse is also a live album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse, released in 1997.

This live album, in many ways could be seen as an epitaph for longtime Neil Young producer David Briggs, who died in 1995 from lung cancer. This is reflected by the song choices which (outside of recent album cuts like "Scattered" and "Big Time") were among Brigg's favorites.

After Neil Young left the California folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation. Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic…

Prior to its release, Greendale received more attention than any Neil Young album in years, but it wasn't positive. Young hauled out his concept album – about an extended family in a small town called Greendale, and how they're torn apart by a murder – to unsuspecting audiences, who by and large were not happy about spending anywhere from 55 to 85 dollars to hear a dense convoluted song cycle, complete with rambling narrative from Young, for the first hour of the show and not hearing many hits in the remainder of the set. Early in the summer of 2003, there was a brief blast of stories about this quasi-scandal, setting the stage for the late-summer release of the album: it got Young some needed press, and announced that unlike his last several albums, Young was actually trying this time around. Frankly, he needed a change.
