It serves as a history of The Kinks on record to date, and was originally planned to include a book by Ray chronicling the band’s career. Unlike the many Pye/PRT exploitation compilations, this double album was compiled by Ray Davies himself.

The Black Album is the 1987 album by Prince. It was originally meant for release in December 1987 as the follow up to his Sign 'O' The Times album, what would have been his second album that year, until Prince had a change of heart, feeling he didn't want to share that level of darkness with people. He made a new album in place of it called Lovesexy and only using one song from The Black Album for it. Once Prince was "The Artist Formerly Known As", he was comfortable with releasing it but only for a limited time. Warner Bros. released it on 22 November, 1994 and was in print for only a year before being pulled from shelves.

Metallica (also known as The Black Album, in reference to The White Album, because of its largely black and nearly-featureless cover) is the 1991 self-titled 5th studio album by the American heavy metal band Metallica.Metallica was released August 12, 1991, through Elektra Records and is the band's best-selling album to date, with 15 million copies sold in the United States alone as of 2007 and 22 million copies worldwide. On the cover, only the band's logo and a coiled snake (derived from the Gadsden flag - which could be seen hanging on a wall in the "One on One" recording studio where the album was recorded) are visible. The motto of the Gadsden flag, "Don't Tread on Me", is also the title of a song featured on the album.
