Dreams and Memories is Simon Kent second album, and was recorded over a three year period. The album was produced by Simon, with producer Sam Sketty remixing three tracks. Simon’s regular band all feature on the recording, and there are additional contributions from Giorgio Li Calzi (trumpet), Nick d’Virgilio (drums) and Neil Cowlan (guitar). The resulting songs are emotional, atmospheric and melodic, and songs on the album touch on themes as diverse as alienation, life’s stolen moments and terrorism. The new release is the latest milestone in an extremely busy few months which have seen Simon putting a new band together, receiving airplay on more than 40 UK and US radio stations (including Radio 2 and Radio 3), and playing a sell out showcase to an ecstatic crowd at Club West One for BBC Radio.

For Simon Rattle, Jean Sibelius is “one of the most staggeringly original composers that there is”. And indeed, this music has a unique musical language whose many beauties are particularly succinctly conveyed in Sibelius’s seven symphonies. There is sonorous warmth as much as there is austere Nordic folklore. Moreover, there is a conceptual boldness that takes the listener on exciting musical journeys of discovery. In 2015, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Sibelius’s birth, Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker presented the cycle live, which was met with unanimous delight by audiences and critics alike. “The Philharmoniker show that with them and Simon Rattle, Sibelius is in excellent hands,” wrote the Berliner Zeitung, “because the orchestra has that astringency and sheer power which is so important for this kind of music.”

The Berliner Philharmoniker celebrate their founding day (May 1st, 1892) in a European city of cultural significance every year. In 2016, they travelled to Røros in Norway, to play in the town’s beautiful baroque church. Norwegian violinist Vilde Frang made her debut with the Berliner Philharmonker at this year’s concert, joining them for Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor.

Bridge Over Troubled Water was one of the biggest-selling albums of its decade, and it hasn't fallen too far down on the list in years since. Apart from the gospel-flavored title track, which took some evolution to get to what it finally became, however, much of Bridge Over Troubled Water also constitutes a stepping back from the music that Simon & Garfunkel had made on Bookends – this was mostly because the creative partnership that had formed the body and the motivation for the duo's four prior albums literally consumed itself in the making of Bridge Over Troubled Water…
