John Davidson was a vocalist who could sell a lot of albums without the benefit of hit singles. He put several songs on the adult contemporary chart, but never once graced the pop chart despite making some very successful albums. My Best to You was a commercial disappointment after Davidson's first album, The Time of My Life!, but again shows that he is a confident and dynamic vocalist, unlike many of the "golden throats" celebrity vocalists with whom he is often lumped. At times he sounds startlingly similar to Pat Boone, but asserts his own identity on songs like "That's Life" and "Sunny." Davidson's music is a perfect example of how traditional and teen idol pop turned into easy listening in the late '60s without suffering much of a change at all.

Ella Fitzgerald, who in the late '50s recorded the very extensive George and Ira Gershwin Songbook, revisits their music on this duet outing with pianist André Previn. Her voice was past her prime by this point, but she was able to bring out a lot of the beauty in the ten songs, giving the classic melodies and lyrics tasteful and lightly swinging treatment. Nice Work If You Can Get It is not an essential CD but is a reasonably enjoyable outing.

With her vintage dresses and unabashedly sexy posturing, Lavay Smith evokes a bygone era, one when jazz was for dancing rather than for sitting and listening to, and when jump blues hadn't yet been displaced by rock & roll. The other thing that is unabashed about Smith is her repertoire, which on her third album consists primarily of standards – and not just any standards, but songs so familiar they border on period cliché: "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," "'Deed I Do," "On the Sunny Side of the Street," even (heaven help us) "When the Saints Go Marching In." What can justify a program like this is any combination of the following: innovative arrangements; tremendous energy; a voice that either surprises or simply knocks down the walls; or undeniable chops.
