At the end of March 2011, Bill Nelson and the Gentlemen Rocketeers, along with one hundred plus guests, populated Studio A at Metropolis, West London, for a dynamite concert reminiscent of the Marquee club in its heyday. A blistering fourteen song set from the band, which covers much of Bill’s career to date, was the result. We’re delighted to present that set here on both CD and DVD, together with an interview with Bill and a sublime four track solo set as DVD extras.

The Nelson Riddle Orchestra was always great enough to play music for film and television soundtracks, and accompany the greatest of stars, including Louis Jordan, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among many others. For the band to back up the 1963 version of the Oscar Peterson trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen might have created some tension, with Peterson always wanting to cut loose and go over the top as opposed to the silky smooth sound Riddle favored. Fortunately, Peterson strikes a balance between playing it cool and lettin' 'er rip on this collection of standards with the dinner hour in mind…

Traditionalists may rue the day, but the historical performance movement has come to Chopin, and it's clear it has a lot to offer in this release by Argentine pianist Nelson Goerner and the veteran Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under Frans Brüggen. Goerner plays an 1849 Erard instrument, some 20 years younger than the music of the youthful Chopin that's on the program, but arguably representative of a sound ideal he would have had in his head.

Two great interpreters, poets and lovers of the French repertory and chamber music join forces here: the violinist Tedi Papavrami and the pianist Nelson Goerner. They have chosen to devote this programme to the two violin sonatas of Gabriel Fauré and the Sonata of César Franck. It was in 1875 that Fauré composed his First Sonata for violin and piano, characterised by its originality and its formal design, which marked the start of a new era for French chamber music.

On Pancho & Lefty, their first album together, Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson managed a rare feat: an album by two legends that lives up to, and at one point exceeds, expectations. In 1982, both artists were at the top of their game, Haggard just having released a great comeback album in Big City, and Nelson in the midst of a creative and commercial peak. The centerpiece of the album is the title track. Penned by Texas songwriter Townes Van Zandt, the ballad of two renegades and the respect they earned from the law is the perfect vehicle for Haggard and Nelson, both of whom managed to achieve legendary status in spite of being outsiders to the Nashville establishment.

Good Times is the eighth studio album by country singer Willie Nelson. Arrangements were by Anita Kerr, Bill Walker and Ray Stevens. This is kind of an odd record. One side is very sparse instrumentally, while the other side has three different people providing arrangements. The songs are okay (maybe subpar for Nelson), with one of the most interesting being his cover of Mickey Newbury’s “Sweet Memories.”

Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real are known for their collaborations with illustrious folk-rock and blues figures such as Neil Young and B.B. King, and their frontman is the progeny of none other than the great Willie Nelson. This self-titled release is their fifth studio album and is resplendent with the “cowboy hippie surf rock” sound the band has become known for, rendered even more eclectic (yet still stunningly cohesive) by guest appearances from Lady Gaga (Find Yourself) and indie pop quartet Lucius (Set Me Down on a Cloud).

After a steller career of coloborations with some of the greatest vocalists of the 20th Century(longest with Sinatra), Nelson Riddle was invited to cut a couple of albums for MPS, in Vegas, in 1971. The easy listening orchestras and conductors were begining to be replaced by Soft Rock. The 20 selections on this disc are the result of the combined("Communication" and "Changing Colors")albums. The orchestrations and sound quality are first rate. Nice arragements of "My Sweet Lord" and "Close to You" and Jobims "Corcovado", are the only songs familar to me. The unfamilar material is what attracted me. A few songs are penned by Riddle himself. The general feel throughout is upbeat. I've listened several times and lamented the discs' conclusion. Riddles orchestral canvas of just the right instrumentation is sensational. For a collector wanting to add a later Riddle sound to their earlier Capital hits(Route 66, etc.), needs to have a look at this set.
