Joe Farnsworth is undoubtedly one of the best drummers today in the more traditional, straight-ahead school of jazz. He has appeared numerous times on Venus Records releases led by Eric Alexander, but this time he took the lead and made a fabulous album in tribute to his heroes, legendary jazz drummers. Farnsworth dedicates one tune for each drummer, either his own composition or a song associated with the drummer in question. They are, in the order of the tunes, Max Roach, Art Blakey, Billy Higgins, Art Taylor, Alan Dawson, Buddy Rich, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Baby Dodds, and Roy Haynes. As expected, his bandmates and long-time collaborators (Eric Alexander, Harold Mabern, and Nat Reeves) do a fantastic job, but the focus of this album is clearly on Farnsworth and his fantastic drumming.

Kosmische and Head sounds with plenty of Minimoog, analogue synths / keyboards, effects, loops, tape manipulation, treated percussions, etc., courtesy of Galactic Explorers, an electronic, minimal, ambient krautrock trio featuring Reinhard Karwatky (Dzyan). The album is the band's first to be released under the record label, following the folding of their former label, Jive Records, in 2011. The album was produced by Don Gilmore and recorded at Revolution Studios in Toronto. On June 5, 2012, the same day as Venus' visible transit across the sun, the band released the album title and release date. The album spawned three singles ("Chalk Outline", "The High Road" and "Misery Loves My Company"). It is the last of the band's albums to feature former lead singer Adam Gontier. The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Transit of Venus is one of the group's most acclaimed albums and it was nominated for Best Rock Album at the Juno Awards of 2014.

Three albums in the novelty has worn off, but Dengue Fever has smartly chosen to keep evolving. While that means their unquestionably unique offering no longer startles, it's no less riveting – Venus on Earth is at once the band's most accessible and most varied release. A recap: when first heard from in 2003 on their self-titled debut, Dengue Fever was like no other band, a bunch of L.A. hipsters fronted by a Cambodian-born woman, Chhom Nimol, who paid homage to that Asian nation's pre-Pol Pot cheesy psychedelic-cum-lounge-surf-garage pop sound of the '60s/early '70s, music obscure enough that only a tiny handful of Americans could honestly claim to have known the first thing about it – certainly, the source material spun outside of the orbit of the so-called core world music audience.
