David Matthews and Peter Sheppard Skærved have been collaborating on a series of works for violin formany years now, in a partnership that has resulted in over 30 works, from string quartets to many piecesfor violin alone. Matthews sets Sheppard Skærved formidable technical challenges, and Sheppard Skærved surprises Matthews by finding ways of overcoming the difficulties in his path. Behind all the pyrotechnics, this collaboration is generating one of the largest, and most musically rewarding, body of compositions for solo violin by any living composer. The range of reference in this music is wide, from Australian magpies and European songthrushes, via anAlpine ranz des vaches, to Three Chants, where the violinist is required to whistle and sing as he plays.

The booklet notes for this Scottish audiophile release, perhaps surprisingly in view of American-British annotator and group leader Laurence Dreyfus' background in academic musicology, are models of their kind. They make the best possible case for the viol music of early seventeenth century composer John Ward, who usually plays third or fourth fiddle (or viol) to Gibbons, Dowland, Purcell, and even John Jenkins among general listeners and specialists alike. In both his prose (given in English only) and his interpretations, Dreyfus and his Phantasm consort capture the pleasantly meandering quality of Ward's viol pieces, which lack the melancholy of Dowland's, the pungent and daring dissonance of Gibbons', or the general brilliance of Purcell's.

Classical, Orchestral | WEB FLAC (tracks) & d. booklet | 65:04 min | 252 MB
Label: Naxos | Tracks: 08 | Rls.date: 2016

This recording brings together for the first time some of Portugal's leading composers in a unique programme dedicated to their works for cello and orchestra. The impressionistic and luxuriant harmonies of Luiz Costa's Poema contrast with Fernando Lopes-Graça's sombre and austere Concerto da Camera, a commission from Mstislav Rostropovich. Luís de Freitas Branco's Cena Lírica is an early, romantically expressive piece, while the Concerto by his eminent pupil Joly Braga Santos is a hauntingly poetic symphonic masterpiece.

These five works, covering the range from Bloch's student days in Brussels and through his first decades in the USA, bear witness to a fertile and expanding imagination. Central to any survey of Bloch must be the so-called ""Jewish"" music which occupied him for just a decade around the time of the First World War and into the 20s and which includes his greatest and most popular score, Schelomo - Rhapsodie hébraïque for cello and orchestra from 1916. He did not invent the style, however, nor did he always inhabit this world, as evinced by the early Sonate and the big Suite 1919, neither of which could be labelled ""Jewish"".
