From 1986–88, Kusturica played bass guitar in Zabranjeno Pušenje, a rock band from Sarajevo (SR Bosnia and Herzegovina). Although Kusturica played a minor musical role in the band, he returned to the group following the Black Cat, White Cat film and the band's name changed to Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra.
The Charlotte, North Carolina-based bands, second full-length album, The Electric Man, on Bright Antenna Records, produced by Joey Waronker (Beck, Brandon Flowers, Yeasayer, Atoms for Peace, Air), finds singer/guitarist Drake Margolnick and drummer Michael Finster taking listeners on a journey from light into darkness and back again. Reaching new emotional depths through a few life-changing events over the past year, the 12-track album delivers atmospheric rock with passionate vocals, pop-minded melodies, rapturous orchestral soundscapes, and themes that run the gamut from love and loss to fear and despair to hope and happiness. Several songs, including the album’s title track, were inspired by the death of their close friend and former band member, Grant Harding, in 2015.
For this project, veteran tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards performs ten songs named after women's names, including his own "Saskia." Despite the potentially gimmicky nature of the repertoire, the music is conventional hard bop, played with spirit by Edwards, pianist Ronnie Mathews, bassist Chip Jackson, drummer Chip White, and (on four of the ten numbers) trumpeter Eddie Allen. Due to the fine solos of Edwards, Mathews, and Allen and the close attention paid to tempo and mood variations between songs, this is an excellent outing, well worth exploring by straight-ahead jazz collectors.
