Jean Roger-Ducasse was born in Bordeaux on 18 April 1873. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire from 1892 and in 1895, along with Ravel, joined the composition class of Gabriel Faure. In 1902 he won the second Grand Prix de Rome with his cantata Alcyone, with Ravel gaining fourth prize. He had a very active role in musical life in Paris founding the Societe Musicale Independante in 1909 and gaining the position of inspector general for the teaching of singing in Paris schools in 1910.
Duke at the Roadhouse: Live in Santa Fe features clarinetist Eddie Daniels and pianist Roger Kellaway in concert performing a variety of songs by the great Duke Ellington. Also joining in on several songs is cellist James Holland. Recorded as a benefit concert for the New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding, the album is a swinging and highly entertaining set that showcases the sensitive group interplay between Daniels and Kellaway. While most of the songs here are standards, the approach is anything but, and tracks like "In a Sentimental Mood" and "Sophisticated Lady" have a languid, poetic, and harmonically sophisticated quality that speaks to the high level of craft on display here. Anyone who loves these musicians will want to seek out this superb album.
Roger Waters may not have made an album of new material between 1992 and 2017, but he was very active during that quarter-century. He toured regularly, wrote an opera, reunited Pink Floyd for the 2005 charity concert Live 8, and revived The Wall several times, turning the self-absorbed rock opera into a political piece. Is This the Life We Really Want?, his fourth song cycle, picks up on this thread, functioning as barbed protest music for the age of Brexit and Trump. Waters doesn't disguise his bile – there's a lament for "The Last Refugee" and he spits out "picture a leader with no f****** brains," a clear broadside against Trump – but the album doesn't seethe with rage. A reissue of the two-record set, featuring four pieces for computer electronics and voices that amplify to an extreme degree the components and expressive qualities of the voice. "Still," with a text from Samuel Coleridge's The Wanderings of Cain (1798), moves extremely slowly in a "vocal fry" across the aspirate clicks and wind of the performer; "A Merciful Coincidence," on a text from Samuel Beckett's Watt (1953), uses the aggressive-passive inflections of the frog performers croaking, which seems to have intent, if not syntactical "meaning".
