According to mastering engineer Ian Shepherd, Metallica’s new Death Magnetic album has a serious sonic problem: it has been compressed (in the audio sense of the word, not the file size sense) just about as much as it’s possible to compress audio.

Following Cliff Burton's death, Metallica took some time off and initiated new bassist Jason Newsted with a raw, unpolished EP of covers originally recorded by Diamond Head, Holocaust, Killing Joke, Budgie, and the Misfits. Most fit the band's style quite well; only "Last Caress" sounds out of place, as the original seemed looser and more dangerous…

A Metallica album with no members of Metallica? How about a Metallica tribute album with nothing but cellos? That is what Apocalyptica did in 1996 when they released Apocalyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos. No rendition of songs from Metallica's first album, but it does have one from Ride The Lightning, "Creeping Death". Mercury turned these thrash metal dreams into classical reality.

The $5.98 E.P. / $9.98 CD: Garage Days Re-Revisited is an extended play by American heavy metal band Metallica. It was released on August 21, 1987 by Elektra Records. The extended play consisted entirely of covers of late-'70s and early-'80s new wave of British heavy metal bands and hardcore punk music rehearsed in Lars Ulrich's soundproofed garage and then recorded in Los Angeles over the course of six days. This five-song CD was remastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering, Hollywood, CA.

It was the band's last album released through Elektra, thus marking the end of the second-longest timespan between studio albums from Metallica, with nearly six years between the release of Reload and this album. It is also the final collaboration between Metallica and producer Bob Rock, whose relationship began with the band's fifth studio album, 1991's Metallica.
