New Age

On this highly personal album, part of "The Rick Wakeman New Age Collection," Wakeman turns the interpretive skills he once applied to Henry VIII's six wives to a subject much closer to home: his own family. His parents, his wife Nina, his children, and his pets all get their musical portraits painted as keyboard instrumentals…

There has been something of a renaissance of what I like to call chanteuse style vocalists, women who borrow from jazz and romantic torch singers of the past in their style. That got a boost back in 2002 with Norah Jones' first album, and there have also been notable recordings by kd lang, Madeleine Peyroux, Judith Owen, and numerous others. They vary in their approach. Some apply their creative energy to adapting the songs of others, while some are singer-songwriters in their own right. Some take a more contemporary direction while others are decidedly retro their sound.

Those family albums inspired the title of the record you are holding in your hands or playing on your stereo right now. It’s something that has, in a way, been a lifetime in the making - even if it was just an idea to file away for the future. We may not have come from a musical family but we’ve made it a musical family, and a brother and sister who love to sing together really ought to make a record. An incredibly talented group of musicians and sound engineers enabled us to realize our vision and have a great time doing it, and the result is the album now before you: The Family Album. We hope you enjoy it.

At first listen, Halifax, Nova Scotia-based singer/songwriter Jill Barber sounds like merely the latest in a lineage that stretches back at least as far as her fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell. Her debut album For All Time is a familiar blend of folk, country, soft rock, and occasional torchy jazz influences, along with one oddball ringer, the Melanie-style Tin Pan Alley throwback (complete with tootling clarinet!) "When I'm Makin' Love to You." That playful tune is an early indication that Barber isn't interested in being just the next Norah Jones, and closer listens reveal a stronger talent…

The intent of Thom Zimny's documentary The Searcher is to showcase the artistry of Elvis Presley, an aspect that can sometimes get overwhelmed by Presley's enduring popularity. Appropriately, its accompanying soundtrack – available either as a single CD/LP or in a triple-disc deluxe edition – follows the same aesthetic, showcasing Elvis as an artist, not a hitmaker. Of course, there are plenty of hits here, especially on the three-CD edition, which contains two discs of Presley recordings and a disc split between Elvis inspirations, selections from the evocative score from Mike McCready, and a version of "Wooden Heart" by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.

In 1970, Elektra Records released a Doors hits collection called 13. In 1971, the Doors scored two more hits, "Love Her Madly" and "Riders on the Storm," and their lead singer, Jim Morrison, died. In 1972, Elektra released a two-LP anthology containing "Love Her Madly" and "Riders on the Storm," along with a lot of album tracks. But there was no single-LP compilation that contained all the Doors' hits, from "Light My Fire" to "Riders on the Storm." This 11-track 1973 album was an attempt to address that problem, and at the time of its release, containing seven of the Doors' eight Top 40 hits (the exception being "The Unknown Soldier"), it was the best Doors greatest-hits collection on the market…
