It's filled with some of the most important and representative recordings made by this "virtuose" pianist. My favorite ones are the sessions with Nelson Freire. Sessions with Mischa Mayski are great also! Very recommended to everyone that appreciate calssical piano albums, performed by one of the greatest names of the last 50 years.

The name of Martha Argerich on any label always means fire, and so it is here. She and Gidon Kremer play with quite exceptional urgency and temperament, and the bright, clear recording brings up both instruments with a sheen. In fact the music springs at you with such immediacy that anyone previously of the opinion that Schumann was showing signs of tiredness in these latish works will be compelled to think again.

This is the original Prokofiev/Ravel concerto coupling as it appeared on LP; the Prokofiev has also been coupled with the Tchaikovsky First Concerto. I prefer this edition since superb performances of the Ravel are less common. The young (1967) Martha Argerich plays the Prokofiev for maximum brilliance but leavens the Ravel with the composer's ironic lyricism. It's very effective. The bonus is one of the greatest performances of the Ravel piano suite ever recorded, but it leaves me wondering what will happen to the remainder of the original LP. All those solo Ravel pieces should be in the catalog; as Argerich plays them, they offer a primer on what keyboard color is all about.

In 1961, Ruggiero Ricci was already a world famous violin soloist. He asked the brilliant up and coming Martha Argerich, who was only 19, to join him on a tour to Russia. Part of their recital in Leningrad was broadcast and preserved by the Leningrad Radio. This part is presented here, completely remastered, for the first time ever. The program includes Prokofiev sonata for solo violin that Ricci gave the World Premiere of in 1959, 6 years after Prokofiev's death.
