Powerful, heavy & bluesy ! People say its the toughest sounding band around. The band with the original, raw sound hails from New Orleans, Louisiana. Johnny leads the ensemble and has racked up 11 records, countless festival appearances, over 30 european tours, a feature in a 2013 film as well as recording for the BBC in London, German National Radio in Bremen, and Belgian National Radio in Brussels. JMMBs music is a blend of new and old at the same time. Roots run deep as Johnny spent 16 years (and Smoke 6 years) at the blues shrine "Babe's & Ricky's Inn" under tutelage from Laura Mae "Mama" Gross. She taught them the only color that mattered was blue and encouraged them…

Johnny Mastro And The Mama's Boys follow up their genre stretching Beautiful Chaos with a step further on down the path of experimental blues. This release skirts the edge of psychedelic, with a heavy blues sound as if Black Sabbath were playing blues. With the addition of Peter Atanasoff (Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Tito & Tarantula, Rickie Lee Jones, Norah Jones) the band pushes the blues genre into a very cool area.

This is a great collection of The Mamas & The Papas on 3CDs. It would have easily fit on 2 CDs but I guess it was a marketing scheme to make people think they were getting more for their money. Nonetheless, it is still a great collection and features some tracks you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else. The fans of this group will not want to miss this one. I found no listing for this set in AMG.

Although former New Christy Minstrels singer Barry McGuire scored a fluke novelty hit with the Bob Dylan-styled folk-rock protest anthem "Eve of Destruction" in the summer of 1965, neither he nor producer Lou Adler's startup label Dunhill Records seems to have had a long-term plan for his solo career beyond trying to score another hit single. Naturally, Dunhill quickly issued an Eve of Destruction LP, filling the tracks with McGuire covers of recent folk hits and more originals by P.F. Sloan, who'd penned the hit. Sloan also wrote the follow-up singles "Child of Our Times" and "This Precious Time," neither of which made the Top 40. By the end of the year, Dunhill had another McGuire LP, This Precious Time, again mixing Sloan songs with other people's hits like "Do You Believe in Magic" and "Yesterday." That is the first of two McGuire albums combined on this two-fer CD reissue.

As compilations go this is up there with the best. 28 tracks of the Beach Boys at the top of their form (or close to the top, anyway). And at the price this is great value. It's easy to forget just how important the Beach Boys were to the progression of popular music in the 1960s. Brian Wilson used to watch what the Beatles were doing and try to match them on the artistic level. The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' was born of this rivalry and Paul McCartney regarded it as one of the greatest popular-music albums ever made. It spurred the Beatles to complete 'Revolver' and then make 'Sgt Pepper'. Brian Wilson was the Beach Boys' creative genius and when he broke down they lost their leadership position. However they left a huge repertoire of major hits, many of which are captured on this compilation. Some of the most finely crafted pop-music recordings ever made are here. Pete Doggett has written a paragraph in the accompanying booklet giving a little background to each of the tracks, which makes for interesting reading.
