This is neo progressive rock, in the style of Arena. Clive Nolan's contribution in the progressive rock world is impressive: Pendragon, Arena and then here in Shadowland. He plays tons of keyboards here and composes the music. The style is prog hard rock, sometimes almost metal, because of the razor and aggressive guitar sound of Karl Groom. Nolan's keyboards are varied and he has a very unique scattered style that can be interesting in many bits. Lots of moog solos here.

With Bird Saviour, Clouds and Wind (aka Madárszabadító, Felhö, Szél, 2006), Hungarian director István Szaladják weaves a haunting and lyrical period fable on the importance of asceticism in life and the beauty that lies therein. The tale unfolds at an undefined point in late 19th century Russia, when the paths of two fellow travelers make an unlikely intersection. An inquisitive and seemingly unremarkable young farmer boy named Vaska (Alexandr Markov), who totes a live bird in a wooden cage; and an enigmatic old man called The Bird Saviour (painter Robert Ovakimjan)…..

A saxophonist whose patiently evolving style has been one of the more interesting stories in contemporary jazz, Ravi Coltrane helps launch Columbia's Eighty-Eights subsidiary (founded by Japanese producer Yasohachi "88" Itoh) with a set that is by turns more freewheeling and lyrical than his previous major label efforts. Featuring two bands–one with George Colligan on piano and the other Andy Milne–Mad 6 reflects Ravi's involvement in both jazz classicism and the throbbing, funkified bop of Brooklyn's M-Base school.

Recorded in the mid-'90s, Mad Nomad(s) reaffirms Henri Texier's presence on the French scene. The playing and compositions are remarkable throughout and display a lot of variety, all the tunes being performed in various groupings but mainly by a septet with a strong and young saxophone front line. Texier's own "Dezarwa" is a tribute to drummer Art Taylor's own brand of hard bop. Drummer Tony Rabeson's "Radio Bo" is given a more relaxed and less-boppish treatment than on pianist Bojan Zulfikarpasic's Koreni. Homage is paid to free jazz with a powerful rendition of Ornette Coleman's "Happy House," a composition which finds a natural home on this work. And guitarist Noël Akchoté's explosive "Blasted Rats" echoes the leader's outcry.
