This is the first complete recording of MacDowell's art songs. Between 1883 and 1902 he composed a total of 42 songs, which were, however, published out of chronological sequence. The earliest in opus number, the Two Old Songs, Opus 9, were actually the eighth group of songs MacDowel1 wrote. If we examine MacDowell's songs in their order of composition, we notice a marked change in technical style. The earliest, dating from 1883, are full and opulent, but he soon began cutting back the piano score to the merest background for the vocal line.

The finest of MacDowell's short characteristic pieces are collected in four suites. Woodland Sketches, Opus 51 (1896); Sea Pieces, Opus 55 (1898); Fireside Tales, Opus 61 (1902); and New England Idyls, Opus 62 (1902). Each work is clearly structured and compact. Each is an individual tonal painting executed by a sure hand certain of what it wants to achieve and how to achieve it. One may be a modest diatonic ditty supported by constant triads; another a complex chromatic melody heard above altered seventh and ninth chords.

From the notes: So often one finds in the history of music that the reputation of a great artist who was successful in life languishes after death for some time before being reappraised at its true worth; Dame Myra Hess is a good example. So significant were her National Gallery wartime midday recitals, in terms not only of musical excellence but also of spiritual significance, that the cumulative effect of them was that the memory of the hours of beautiful music-making was almost obscured by the success of the great undertaking itself. Posterity remembers the even rather that the artist." written by Charles Haynes
