August 1920 in Berlin; 28.

Due to a strong French influence at the beginning of the 18th century ‘bandes de hautbois’ were frequently present in the German courts. These instruments were initially intended for the performance of military and ceremonial music but soon began to take part in more courtly entertainments. A particular style of music was used in compositions for these instruments, as it was also in works for newer instruments, one of these being the oboe da caccia that Fasch employed as the solo instrument in a concerto that has only recently come to light.

There is, of course, no shortage of Romantic-era violin concertos in the instrument's standard repertoire. None of them found with any regularity on the concert stage, however, hail from Denmark. This DaCapo album demonstrates that there are indeed examples that come to us from the Scandinavian country, and even that some of them are inexplicably excluded from the modern canon.

Max Müller is often referred to as the 'father of Religious Studies', having himself coined the term 'science of religion' (or religionswissenschaft) in 1873. It was he who encouraged the comparative study of myth and ritual, and it was he who introduced the oft-quoted dictum: 'He who knows one [religion], knows none'.

"The Fourth is Mahler’s most transparent and lyrical symphony – almost a chamber symphony. Probably also due to its rather reduced format, it has been received in unique and contradictory ways. Even during the time when international audiences had practically no knowledge of Mahler’s music, the Fourth remained relatively popular. Today it is regarded as less impressive than the First, Second, Third, Fifth and Sixth Symphonies; from my point of view, however, this stems from an unacceptable misunderstanding.
