The Zombies is an English rock band, formed in 1958 in St Albans and led by keyboardist and vocalist Rod Argent and vocalist Colin Blunstone. The group scored British and American hits in 1964 with "She's Not There". In the US two further singles, "Tell Her No" in 1965 and "Time of the Season" in 1968, were also successful. Recorded during Marc Bolan's U.S. visits during 1971 and 1972, Spaceball is the first full re-counting of four American radio sessions previously made partially available as a bonus LP within the Marc label's Till Dawn compilation in 1985. Eight songs, taped in L.A. in 1972, are reprised from that set; 11 more are collected here. The overall mood of the two CDs is sparse, but astonishingly dynamic, with the earliest session – taped for WBAI, New York, in June 1971 – especially remarkable. It opens with a pair of unaccompanied Bolan performances, previewing the as-yet-unreleased "Cosmic Dancer" and "Planet Queen." The guitar heavy "Elemental Child" follows, a surprising inclusion given the song's freak-out dynamics, but it's an effective piece, all the more so after bandmates Mickey Finn and bassist Steve Currie join in a few minutes into the song.
The Nashville Sessions was a project begun for Poppy in the early '70s, but languished in the vaults for over 20 years, finally being completed and released in the early '90s, and remains one of Van Zandt's most interesting and mysterious records. When Poppy Records went bankrupt in 1973, it left Townes Van Zandt with two unreleased albums. One was Live at the Old Quarter, Houston, Texas, which was released by Tomato, Poppy's successor, in 1977. The other was a studio recording that languished for 20 years until being issued by Rhino/Tomato in 1993 under the title The Nashville Sessions.
Many musicians lived and were musically active during multiple jazz periods, and some of them actually made significant contributions during all of the periods during which they recorded. But few can claim, as Miles Davis could, to have actually helped design the architecture in every case. Bebop, cool, and fusion all have Davis' handprints deep in the cement of their foundations, and this disc documents some of his best work during the second of those periods. In the mid-'50s he started what would be a tumultuous musical relationship with John Coltrane, and what would eventually become one of the greatest combos in jazz history began to coalesce: alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones in addition to Davis and Coltrane.
This outstanding edition features drum giant Dave Bailey's complete One & Two Feet In. The Gutter Sessions for the first time ever on one release. Bailey's July 19 & 20, 1960 One Foot In The Gutter Session also produced the track Brownie Speaks, which until now has only been released on a Columbia sampler LP. This edition marks the first time that the complete One Foot In The Gutter session is released on one edition and the first time that this version of Brownie Speaks, as well as Epic's phenomenal Getting' Into Somethin' LP, are available on CD. The LP Two Feet In The Gutter completes Dave Bailey's Epic discography, all of which can be found on this release.
