Lick It Up is the hard rock band's eleventh studio album. The 1983 record was the first to feature new lead guitarist Vinnie Vincent who replaced Ace Frehley in 1982 during Kiss' 10th Anniversary Tour. Lick It Up produced singles "Lick It Up" which the group continues to perform live today, and "All Hell's Breakin' Loose". The group went out 'unmasked' while promoting the album, leaving behind their trademark face paint, which hadn't been done since the band's early days.

Crazy Nights became a worldwide hit for Kiss and a platinum album in the United States. Gene Simmons' participation on the record was limited by his pursit of outside interests, such as acting and producing other groups. The bulk of the work on Crazy Nights fell to Paul Stanley, whose pop instincts dominated the record. Stanley brought in producer Ron Nevison, who had lately demonstrated a penchant for rejuvenating the careers of aging rock acts like Heart and Ozzy Osbourne by getting them to work with outside pop writers on crossover material. He employed that approach with Crazy Nights, and although it yielded commercial singles like "Crazy Crazy Nights" and the power ballad "Reason to Live," it also resulted in a synth-drenched record that to some sounded like Kiss was unsuccessfully chasing the styles of much younger bands.

The result of the record was considered to be a major breaking point for the group, setting high standards for all live records. Alive! featured live tracks from their first three studios albums: Kiss, Hotter Than Hell, and Dressed to Kill. The record reached number 9 on the U.S. album chart and remained on the chart for 110 weeks.
