“Boat” is a Korean Japanese co-production charting the experiences and cross cultural friendship of a couple of smugglers, and was directed by Kim Young Nam, whose indie feature “Don’t Look Back” won awards back in 2006. The film is certainly a pan-Asian affair, with a script by Japanese writer Watanabe Aya (previously responsible for “La Maison de Himiko” and “Tennen Kokekko”) and a multinational cast including Ha Jung Woo (“The Chaser”) and Tsumabuki Satoshi (“Pandemic”). It was released in Japan under the title “No Boys, No Cry”, which is arguably more meaningful than its Korean moniker, as the boat and the profession of the characters only really play a part during the early stages.

Genre: Drama

Hard hitting, shocking and incredibly powerful. Kim Ki-duk's take on the effects of the Korean War on its victims is a very good work, marred in part by the hilariously bad performance by Mitch Mahlum as the American soldier. Accused of being Anti-American, it at least has a balanced view of the consequences of war, unlike jingoistic commercial pap such as We Were Soldiers.

Artist, producer, writer, arranger, musician, and all-around first-class baloney-thrower Kim Fowley was the man on the scene in Hollywood, CA, during the mid- to late '60s. This collection compiles 20 tracks from Fowley's solo recordings, circa 1966-1969. The collection kicks off with the garage punker "Underground Lady" from 1966, which, Fowley is happy to point out, was released before the Count Five's "Psychotic Reaction" and the Music Machine's "Talk Talk." "The Trip" is a fascinating bit of drug-laced ephemera ("Summer's here kiddies/It's time to take a trip," Fowley leers in the intro) and one of the CD's highlights…

Roxy - Tonight's The Night Live is one of the most sought-after recordings from his vast archives. This was the first public performance of many of the songs that would make up Young's seminal album Tonight's The Night, which would not be released until June 1975. The album's final track "Walk On" would not appear until the release of On The Beach, in July 1974. Young would be the first artist to christen the stage at what would become one of the world's great clubs, The Roxy Theater on the riotous Sunset Strip, right next door to the already infamous Rainbow Bar & Grille. The shows took place on September 20-22, 1973.
