Heavy Metal

The year 1976 was crucial for the evolution of heavy metal, as landmark albums like Rainbow's Rising and Scorpions' Virgin Killer began to reshape the genre. Perhaps none was quite as important as Judas Priest's sophomore effort, Sad Wings of Destiny, which simultaneously took heavy metal to new depths of darkness and new heights of technical precision…

This collection encapsulates Judas Priest's debut (ROCKA ROLLA) and a majority of their classic sophomore album (SAD WINGS OF DESTINY) for Gull Records, along with an early version of "Diamonds and Rust," and mixes them all up in the running order. Seeing as it's missing "Epitaph," "Island of Domination" and the immortal "Ripper" from SAD WINGS, this CD does not allow one to get the band's first two albums in one package. However, the ROCKA ROLLA tracks have been remixed (some fans argue that they are better) and the title track re-edited, and those changes along with the track arrangement and fantasy-inspired cover art make this package worthwhile for obsessive collectors, even though the gatefold vinyl edition was actually more visually striking…

Sin After Sin is the third album by the British heavy metal group Judas Priest, released in 1977. It was the band's first album on Columbia Records after their contract with Gull Records was terminated, as a consequence of which they lost all rights to Rocka Rolla and Sad Wings of Destiny, and any other demo recordings made during the production of the two albums. This album featured the drum work of a young and upcoming session drummer, Simon Phillips, who was only 19 at the time of recording. The record features a cover of Joan Baez's "Diamonds & Rust", a track that would become a live favourite from then onwards. The album was remastered in 2001, with two bonus tracks added. One of the bonus tracks "Race With The Devil" was at first intended to take the place of "Diamonds & Rust" but their producer, Roger Glover (of Deep Purple fame), wanted them to switch to "Diamonds & Rust", saying that "It would fit along with the rest of the album better."
